Paint recycling
in Michigan.
Paint disposal in Detroit, Ann Arbor and Lansing. Michigan has no PaintCare program, so stores don’t take old paint back for free. Your county or city decides what happens to it.
Check your local rules.
Never pour paint down a drain or a storm drain. Most counties run free hazardous waste drop-offs or collection days for residents only, and many are seasonal, so check dates and call first. Rules on latex differ: Detroit and Washtenaw County take it, but Ingham County doesn’t and says to dry it and trash it. Oil-based paint should go to a collection. Michigan EGLE suggests giving usable paint to neighbors, churches or nonprofits.
No free state program.
Michigan doesn’t have a statewide paint program, so it depends on your city or county. Each city guide shows where latex and oil-based paint can go.

Ann Arbor ↗
Ann Arbor sends paint to Washtenaw County’s free Home Toxics program. You book a Saturday slot on Zeeb Road or a weekday slot at the county’s center near Northville. The county only takes latex that is still liquid; dried latex goes in your trash.

Detroit runs its own free hazardous waste drop-off on East Ferry Street for city residents. It’s open every Thursday and one Saturday a month, and paint is first on its list. Wayne County also holds one more free collection this year, on Saturday, October 10, 2026, in Belleville.

Grand Rapids residents use Kent County's free SafeChem program for oil-based paint, stain, thinner and spray cans. SafeChem does not take latex paint. Kent County says to dry latex out and put it in the trash, or pay a fee to drop it at a RepcoLite store.

Lansing has no year-round paint drop-off. Ingham County runs a free hazardous waste collection behind its health department on South Cedar, but only May through September, and it takes oil-based paint only. Latex gets dried and put in the trash.

Traverse City has no year-round hazardous waste drop-off. Grand Traverse County holds five appointment-only collection days a year, and all of 2026's are over. Until April 2027, dry latex paint and put it in the trash, and store oil-based paint safely until the next event.

Paint stores won’t take these. Take them to your local household hazardous waste site. Your city guide lists it.
