THE LOCAL ANSWERBring leftover latex paint free to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 101 Burton St., Flint, Tuesday–Saturday 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m., if you live in Genesee County. Oil-based paint and stain must wait for Genesee County's Recycle Day, which needs an appointment; the 2026 events ended August 18. Dry latex you can't drop off and put it in the trash with the lid off.
In Flint, Michigan, and the rest of Genesee County, there is no year-round drop-off for oil-based paint. The county's Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission (GCMPC) runs Recycle Day events in summer, by appointment only, and the 2026 events are over. Latex paint is easier: Genesee County residents can drop it off free at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore on Burton Street.
Latex goes to the ReStore on Burton Street
Genesee County residents can bring latex paint free to the Habitat ReStore at 101 Burton St., Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is sent to American Paint Recyclers and comes back as EcoTone paint sold in the same store. Only latex: no stain, varnish, Drylock, textured paint or spray cans.
Oil-based paint waits for Recycle Day
The county's 2026 Recycle Days were May 19, June 16, July 14 and August 18. All are over, and GCMPC says to check back for 2027 dates. Store oil paint, stain and thinner with tight lids until then.
You must register, and the address is a secret until you do
Recycle Day is appointment only. Sign up at recycleday.geneseecountymi.gov; spots run out. The location is sent after you book. Bring ID and your appointment proof, printed or on your phone. PaintCare's listing says cars without proof are turned away.
Same rules from Burton to Fenton
Recycle Day and the ReStore program are county-wide. Davison and Flushing townships posted GCMPC's 2026 Recycle Day notice, and Genesee Township posted the ReStore latex notice. So a Grand Blanc or Clio household has the same options as a Flint one.
Different from Detroit and Lansing
Detroit residents have a weekly free drop-off, and Ingham County runs a set summer site. Genesee County has neither. Its only fixed paint site is the ReStore, and it takes latex only.
