The drop-off is behind the health department building. Bring sharps in a sealed hard-plastic container and tell staff, and don’t tape fluorescent tubes together. Watch the county page in spring for the 2027 start date.
Your state doesn’t have a PaintCare program, so stores here don’t take paint for free. These are the public drop-off programs PaintCare’s map lists, closest first. Most only serve their own residents and some charge a fee. Call before you go.

That’s almost always latex. Ingham County won’t take it. Stir in kitty litter until it’s solid and put it out with your trash.
The 2026 collection ended September 29. Keep the can sealed and stored until the county reopens in May, or call 517-887-4312 to ask about an earlier option.
Use Eaton County’s collections instead. They run in May and August for county residents, and you must register. Dates come out each March.
East Lansing points residents to the same Ingham County collection on South Cedar. Latex is on its not-accepted list too.
Dry latex paint with kitty litter, vermiculite or sawdust and put it in your regular trash; Ingham County won’t take it. Oil-based paint goes to the free Ingham County collection at 5303 S. Cedar St., Tuesdays and Thursdays 2–6 p.m., May through September. The 2026 season ended September 29, so hold oil paint until May.
Lansing has no year-round paint drop-off. Ingham County runs a free hazardous waste collection behind its health department on South Cedar, but only May through September, and it takes oil-based paint only. Latex gets dried and put in the trash.
Ingham County’s collection ran Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2–6 p.m., and the last 2026 day was September 29. It starts again at the beginning of May. Store oil-based paint safely until then, or call 517-887-4312 to ask about other options.
The county says latex is not accepted, even in season. It goes in your regular trash once it’s solid. Mix in kitty litter, vermiculite or sawdust and leave the can open to dry.
The county takes oil-based paint, stains, mineral spirits and sealers. Seal the lids and make sure containers are in good shape.
Parts of Lansing sit in Eaton and Clinton counties, and Ingham's collection is for Ingham residents. Eaton runs its own collections in May and August, with registration; both 2026 events have passed, and dates are announced each March. Clinton County posts its own collection dates.
Delhi Township, just south of Lansing, spells it out: lid off, add enough cat litter to soak up all the liquid, stir to the bottom, then leave it somewhere sunny, away from kids and pets, until hard. For a full can, dry half in a lined box and half in the can.
Michigan has no PaintCare program, so stores don’t take paint back for free. Michigan EGLE suggests giving usable paint to neighbors, churches, parks or nonprofit housing groups. Ingham County residents can drop off sharps at Granger’s Wood Road recycling office (517-372-2800) year-round, but that’s not a paint option.

For latex: open the can, stir in cat litter, vermiculite or sawdust until no liquid is left, and let it harden before it goes in the trash. For oil-based paint: keep it in the original can with the lid sealed and store it upright until the county reopens in May.

October 7, 2026: read Ingham County Health Department’s household hazardous waste page (season, hours, accepted paint, not-accepted list, latex drying advice); East Lansing’s HHW page; Mid-Michigan Recycles’ regional page; a Lansing State Journal story (via Yahoo, September 28, 2026) giving September 29 as the last 2026 day; Delhi Township’s latex page; Eaton County’s event pages; Michigan EGLE’s household hazardous waste pages; PaintCare’s locator data (no Lansing-area listing); the county’s HHW flyer (free for Ingham County residents, facility behind the health department); and the City of Lansing millage library, which shows city taxes levied in Ingham, Clinton and Eaton counties. The City of Lansing’s own trash pages didn’t show any paint guidance we could read. Unresolved: whether Ingham offers off-season appointments (an older search snippet said so; the current county page doesn’t), what residency proof it checks, and the 2027 start date. We did not call any site.
