City of Detroit DPW Household Hazardous Waste Receiving Facility

2000 E Ferry St, Detroit, MI

Accepts
The city’s list starts with “Paint & Paint Products” and also names aerosol cans, kerosene, fuel, lighter fluid and other home chemicals. The list doesn’t split latex from oil-based, and it doesn’t exclude latex.
Who can use it
Detroit residents only. Businesses can’t use it. The city doesn’t say what proof of address to bring, so bring a driver’s license or a utility bill with your Detroit address.
Hours
Every Thursday 7:30 a.m.–2 p.m., and the fourth Saturday of each month 8 a.m.–2 p.m. The city doesn’t post a calendar of Saturday dates or any holiday closures, so call 313-923-2240 to confirm a Saturday, especially around Thanksgiving and in late December.
Load limits
No quantity or container-size limit is published. Not taken: commercial waste, lab chemicals, construction materials and debris, unknown materials, and regular household trash.
Fees
Free. The city says “There is no charge!”

The site is near I-75 and I-94. No appointment is mentioned. If you have a large load, call 313-923-2240 first, since no limit is posted.

Wayne County Household Hazardous Waste Collection (October 10, 2026, WCCCD Ted Scott Campus, Belleville)

9555 Haggerty Rd, Belleville, MI 48111

Accepts
Household paints, primers, stains and dyes; paint thinner, strippers, turpentine, varnish and wood preservatives; artists’ paints; aerosols. Also motor oil, cleaners, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs and electronics.
Who can use it
Wayne County households only, including Detroit. You must show a valid driver’s license or other ID that proves you live in Wayne County.
Hours
One day only: Saturday, October 10, 2026, 8 a.m.–1 p.m. This is the last of Wayne County’s four 2026 collections. The April 11 (Allen Park), June 27 (Dearborn) and August 29 (Westland) events are past.
Load limits
No 55-gallon drums. No commercial or industrial waste, appliances, tires, explosives, ammunition, radioactive or shock-sensitive materials, or household trash.
Fees
Free for Wayne County residents. The flyer lists no fee.

The county moved this event. Its web page says “This event location has changed!” and the current flyer gives the Ted Scott Campus in Belleville. The older schedule and PaintCare’s locator still show the Downriver Campus in Taylor, so don’t go there. After October 10 there are no more 2026 county collections; watch the county page for the 2027 schedule.

THE LOCAL ANSWER

If you live in Detroit, take paint to 2000 E. Ferry St. any Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., or on the fourth Saturday of the month; it’s free. Any Wayne County resident can also use the county’s free collection on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 9555 Haggerty Rd. in Belleville, the last one this year.

Detroit runs its own free hazardous waste drop-off on East Ferry Street for city residents. It’s open every Thursday and one Saturday a month, and paint is first on its list. Wayne County also holds one more free collection this year, on Saturday, October 10, 2026, in Belleville.

Thursday is the easy day

The Ferry Street site is open every Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Saturday option is only the fourth Saturday of the month, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The city doesn’t list the Saturday dates or holiday closures, so call 313-923-2240 before a Saturday trip, especially in late November and December.

You need a Detroit address

The city says the site is for Detroit residents only. If you live in Dearborn, Hamtramck or another Wayne County city, use the county collection or the county voucher instead.

The county event on October 10 is the last one this year

Wayne County holds four free collections a year. The 2026 dates in Allen Park, Dearborn and Westland have passed. The last is Saturday, October 10, 2026, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Wayne County Community College’s Ted Scott Campus, 9555 Haggerty Rd. in Belleville. The county moved it there from Taylor. Bring ID showing you live in Wayne County.

Ask about a county voucher if you miss both

Wayne County gives each household one voucher to drop off household hazardous waste at ERG Environmental Services, 13040 Merriman Rd. in Livonia, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pick one up at 3600 Commerce Court, Building E, in Wayne, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Supplies are limited, so call 734-326-5708 first.

Keep it out of the cart and the drain

Michigan’s environment agency says never to pour paint into a storm drain or a home drain. Detroit’s site doesn’t take regular trash, so bring only the paint and chemicals.

Free pickup programs and other options

Wayne County residents can get one voucher per household to use ERG Environmental Services, 13040 Merriman Rd., Livonia, weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vouchers come from 3600 Commerce Court, Building E, Wayne (734-326-5708), while supplies last. Michigan has no PaintCare program, so stores don’t take paint back for free. Michigan EGLE suggests giving usable paint to neighbors, churches, parks or nonprofit housing groups.

Keep paint in its original labeled cans with lids tight. Put the cans in a box in your trunk so they don’t tip. Separate paint from any sharps or medicines; the city wants pills in a zip-top bag and needles in a hard plastic container. Bring ID with your address.

Detroit questions5
Where can I drop off paint in Detroit?

At the city’s household hazardous waste site, 2000 E. Ferry St., near I-75 and I-94. It’s free for Detroit residents on Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the fourth Saturday of each month, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Does Detroit take latex paint?

The city’s list says “Paint & Paint Products” and doesn’t exclude latex. Call 313-923-2240 if you want to check before you go.

I live in Dearborn. Can I use the Ferry Street site?

No. It’s for Detroit residents only. Use Wayne County’s October 10 collection in Belleville or ask the county for a voucher.

Is there a Wayne County paint drop-off this fall?

Yes, one: Saturday, October 10, 2026, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 9555 Haggerty Rd. in Belleville (moved from Taylor). It’s the last county collection of 2026. After that, use the county voucher for ERG in Livonia or wait for the 2027 dates.

Can a contractor use these sites?

No. The city site refuses commercial waste, and the county takes only household products from residents.

Sources and how we checked11

October 7, 2026: read the City of Detroit’s HHW facility page, its HHW information page (accepted and unaccepted items) and its recycling FAQ; Wayne County’s Environmental Services page, HHW program page, the current October 10, 2026 flyer (Belleville, Ted Scott Campus; the page notes the location changed), the 2026 voucher flyer and the 2026 schedule posted by Redford Township (which still shows Taylor); Michigan EGLE’s household hazardous waste pages; and PaintCare’s locator data, which still lists the old Taylor location (Michigan has no PaintCare program). The city doesn’t say whether latex is treated differently, what ID it checks, which Saturdays fall on holidays, or any quantity limit; we don’t list specific Saturday dates because the city doesn’t publish them. Detroit’s pages give no advice on drying latex for the trash, so we didn’t add any. The voucher flyer names ERG Environmental Services, 13040 Merriman Rd., Livonia (weekdays 9 a.m.–5 p.m.). We did not call any site.

Checked October 7, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
