THE LOCAL ANSWERTake oil-based paint, stain, thinner and spray cans to Kent County SafeChem at 1045 Wealthy St SW; it's free for Kent County residents and needs no appointment. SafeChem does not take latex. Dry latex with cat litter until it's solid, then put it in your trash.
Grand Rapids residents use Kent County's free SafeChem program for oil-based paint, stain, thinner and spray cans. SafeChem does not take latex paint. Kent County says to dry latex out and put it in the trash, or pay a fee to drop it at a RepcoLite store.
Check the label before you load the car
Kent County's test: if the label says clean up with water, it's latex and SafeChem won't take it. If it says mineral spirits or paint thinner, or uses the words 'alkyd' or 'combustible', it's oil-based and goes to SafeChem for free.
Wealthy Street is the main site
The SafeChem site at 1045 Wealthy St SW is open Monday and Thursday afternoons, Wednesday mornings and the second Saturday of each month. No appointment needed. Kentwood (Tuesday), Wyoming (Monday and Thursday), Rockford (Friday) and the South Kent Landfill in Byron Center (Monday morning) cover the other days.
Dry latex like oatmeal
Throw the lid away, then stir in cat litter, sawdust or sand until the paint is as thick as oatmeal. Let it harden in a spot away from kids, pets and rain. Then it can go in your trash. Don't put the can in your recycling bin, even when it's empty, because dried paint ruins the recycling.
Pick up free stain or thinner at the Swap Shop
The Wealthy Street site runs a Swap Shop with usable products people dropped off, often spray paint, stain, varnish and thinner. You don't have to bring anything. You sign a reuse waiver before you leave. It does not carry latex paint.
Big cleanouts need a heads-up
Call 616-632-7941 or email the county recycling office first if you have more than 6 moving boxes or 20 gallons of hazardous waste, or anything in a container bigger than 5 gallons. SafeChem won't take drums at all.
