THE LOCAL ANSWERBring oil-based paint, stain and spray cans to Muskegon County's free Saturday event on October 17, 2026, 9 a.m.–1 p.m., at 1350 E. Keating Ave. After the last Friday collection on October 23, the site closes until May. Latex is not taken: call one of the latex outlets the county names (Port City Paints, RepcoLite or Solid Rock) first, or dry it and put it in the trash.
In Muskegon, Michigan, Muskegon County runs a free household hazardous waste site on East Keating Avenue, open only on the second and fourth Fridays from May through October. A larger Saturday event on October 17, 2026 lists oil-based paint by name. Latex paint is not taken at either. The county names two paint stores and Solid Rock for good latex, or the trash once it's dried.
Two chances left in 2026
The Saturday event is October 17, 9 a.m.–1 p.m., at 1350 E. Keating Ave. The last Friday collection is October 23, 9 a.m.–noon, at 1300 E. Keating Ave. After that, the site is closed until May.
Saturday is the sure bet for oil paint
The Saturday list names oil-based paint products and aerosol cans with paint in them. The Friday list names petroleum products and aerosols but not oil-based paint, and the county says Saturday's longer list doesn't apply on Fridays. If you go Friday, call 231-724-6001, option 4, first.
Good latex: call before you go
Muskegon County's pages say leftover latex that has never frozen can go to Solid Rock Housing Support (the Saturday page calls it the Solid Rock Depot), Port City Paints or RepcoLite Paints. We could not confirm this on their own websites, and the county gives no addresses, so call first.
Store it safely over winter
The site is closed November through April. The county asks you to keep hazardous products stored safely until the May Friday collections restart.
Shorter season than Grand Rapids
Kent County's SafeChem near Grand Rapids is open year-round, but only to Kent County residents. Muskegon County residents use the Keating Avenue site, which runs May to October only.
