THE LOCAL ANSWERIf you live on the Ottawa County side of Holland, take oil-based paint, stain and spray cans to the county center at 14053 Quincy St. any Tuesday or Thursday, 8 a.m.–2 p.m. It's free, with no appointment. On the Allegan County side, call 269-686-4559 to book a free drop-off in Allegan. Neither county takes latex, so dry it and put it in the trash.
In Holland, Michigan, oil-based paint goes free to Ottawa County's Environmental Sustainability Center at 14053 Quincy St., open Tuesdays and Thursdays with no appointment. The city sits in two counties, though. Allegan County lets City of Holland residents use its appointment-only drop-off in Allegan. Neither county takes latex paint at its events or centers. Ottawa County says to dry it and put it in the trash.
First, check which county you live in
Holland sits on the line between Ottawa and Allegan counties. Ottawa County's centers are free for Ottawa County residents. Allegan County lists City of Holland and Laketown Township residents as able to use its own program.
Ottawa side: just show up on Quincy Street
The Holland center at 14053 Quincy St. is open Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m.–2 p.m. Households need no appointment. Bring oil-based paint, stain, thinner and spray cans in containers no bigger than 5 gallons, with lids on.
Need a Saturday? Drive to Grand Haven or Jenison
The Holland center has no weekend hours. Ottawa County's Grand Haven center (16850 Comstock Ave.) opens the 3rd Saturday of each month, 8–11 a.m. The Georgetown center in Jenison (6693 Roger Dr.) opens the 1st Saturday, 8–11 a.m.
Allegan side: call for an appointment
Allegan County takes household hazardous waste by appointment at its Health Department, 3255 122nd Ave. in Allegan. Call 269-686-4559 or email resourcerecovery@allegancounty.org. Its 2026 drive-through events in Wayland, Fennville and Otsego are over.
Latex: dry it, or ask RepcoLite
Ottawa County says latex may be dried and put in your regular trash. The City of Holland's recycling finder also lists RepcoLite at 473 W. 17th St. and 701 E. Lakewood Blvd. as taking latex for a fee. RepcoLite's own site doesn't mention it, so call the store first (RepcoLite lists 616-396-5213 for 17th Street and 616-393-0025 for Lakewood). Paint cans don't go in the curbside recycling cart.
