Paint recycling
in South Carolina.
Paint disposal in Charleston, Columbia and Greenville. South Carolina has no PaintCare program, so stores don’t take leftover paint back. Each county sets its own rules.
Check your local rules.
SC DES, the state environmental agency, says you can dry latex paint with clay cat litter, sawdust or a paint hardener and put it in your household trash. Take oil-based paint to a county hazardous waste program or event. Rules vary a lot by county: Charleston County takes latex and oil-based paint at its staffed centers, Monday–Saturday at most of them; Richland County takes latex only and saves oil-based paint for special events; Greenville County wants latex dried solid and has no drop-off for oil-based paint. County sites are for residents only, so bring ID. Use RecycleHereSC on the SC DES website to find your county’s options.
No free state program.
South Carolina doesn’t have a statewide paint program, so it depends on your city or county. Each city guide shows where latex and oil-based paint can go.
