THE LOCAL ANSWERTake usable latex paint to a Lancaster County convenience site such as Lynwood (1349 Lynwood Drive), open Monday, Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sites don't take oil-based paint, spray paint, or dried, empty, leaking or unlabeled cans. For oil-based paint, call Lancaster County Public Works at 803-283-2101.
This guide is for Lancaster, South Carolina, the seat of Lancaster County between Charlotte and Camden (not Lancaster, Pennsylvania). The county's 12 staffed convenience sites take usable latex paint. No site takes oil-based or spray paint, and we found no county hazardous waste day. Most sites close Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
Only good latex paint is taken
SC DES lists 'paint (usable latex)' at all 12 county convenience sites. PaintCare's listing for the county adds that the sites turn away oil-based and spray paint, and cans that are empty, dried out, leaking or unlabeled.
Watch the odd schedule
Most sites are open Monday, Friday and Saturday, closed Tuesday and Thursday, and open only part of Wednesday. On Wednesday, Lynwood, Erwin Farm, Indian Land, Kershaw and Rich Hill close at 2 p.m.; Racetrack, Unity, Tradesville, Heath Springs, Midway and Fort open at 1 p.m. McGill is the opposite, open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Fort is closed Saturday. The county's hours chart (from November 2020) and SC DES disagree on two sites: the chart shows Rich Hill open Saturday and McGill opening at 6 a.m. Saturday. Call 803-283-2101 before you go to either one.
City residents use the county sites too
The City of Lancaster's own FAQ sends residents to the county recycling locations. City trash goes in the roll-a-waste cart, and the city's FAQ doesn't mention paint.
Oil-based paint has no local drop-off
We found no Lancaster County hazardous waste day or site for oil-based paint. SC DES says oil-based paint belongs in a household hazardous waste program. Call Public Works at 803-283-2101 to ask about the next option. Visits to the office are by appointment.
Public Works on Pageland Highway isn't for paint
The county's Public Works yard at 1980 Pageland Highway takes only electronics, small yard debris and tires, one load a day.
