THE LOCAL ANSWERBring your paint to a Spartanburg County recycling center, such as Dexter Road (50 Dexter Road) or Stone Station (185 Gowens Road), Monday–Saturday 7 a.m.–7 p.m. The county lists no fee for residents, and you can also pick up paint other people left. Don’t put paint or liquids in a City of Spartanburg cart.
In Spartanburg, South Carolina, you can drop off leftover paint six days a week at any staffed Spartanburg County recycling center. Every center runs a paint exchange, so you can also take home paint someone else left. City of Spartanburg households use the same county centers, since the city’s carts can’t take paint. This guide covers Spartanburg and Spartanburg County. Greenville County next door has its own, different rules.
Every county center takes paint, all 18 of them
Spartanburg County lists paint as accepted at all its recycling centers, “drop-off or pick-up.” Besides the three in Spartanburg (Dexter Road, White Stone and Stone Station), there are centers in Roebuck, Boiling Springs (Valley Falls), Cowpens, Duncan (Berry’s Pond), Inman (New Prospect), Chesnee (Mayo and Cooley Springs), Lyman (Hwy. 357), Campobello, Woodruff (Wofford Road and Hobbysville), Pauline, Enoree and Wellford. All are open Monday–Saturday 7 a.m.–7 p.m., except Wellford and the Wellford Landfill, which close at 4:30 p.m.
Shop the paint exchange before you buy
The county’s FAQ says all staffed centers run a paint exchange where residents can drop off or pick up paint during open hours. Check the shelf before buying primer or a gallon for a shed or fence.
Spartanburg County posts no drying rule
Spartanburg County’s pages don’t ask you to dry paint; its centers take paint for the exchange. Greenville County next door may differ. PaintCare’s listings say Greenville’s residential centers take only fully solidified paint, and usable liquid paint goes to Twin Chimneys Landfill.
City carts: no paint
The City of Spartanburg says paint and liquids, TVs, electronics, tires and yard trimmings should not go in your gray cart. For items the city won’t pick up, it sends residents to Spartanburg County Solid Waste at 864-949-0211.
Spray cans and other chemicals wait for spring
The county takes household hazardous waste only at its annual spring collection event. The county’s page doesn’t post the next date. Its recycling bins take no aerosol cans, and it doesn’t say whether spray paint goes on the paint exchange. Ask the attendant, or call the Recycling Coordinator at 864-949-1658.
