THE LOCAL ANSWERHarden latex paint with kitty litter or sand, then drop it at a Colleton County convenience center such as Beltline, 1732 Robertson Boulevard (Monday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.). The county won't take liquid paint; it suggests giving usable paint to a Habitat for Humanity resale store, though we found none in Colleton County. For oil-based paint, call Colleton County Solid Waste at 843-893-2313.
This guide is for Walterboro, South Carolina, in Colleton County. The county takes paint only after it has hardened. Its convenience centers and the landfill on Green Pond Highway won't take liquid paint, and we found no local hazardous waste day for oil-based paint.
Liquid paint is turned away
Colleton County's centers and its landfill both say they take paint only once it is solid. Mix in kitty litter or sand until it is hard, then bring it in.
Beltline is the in-town choice
Beltline, on Robertson Boulevard, is open seven days, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Most outlying centers, like Canadys, Hendersonville and Ritter, are open only Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Big cleanouts go to the landfill
The county says the centers are sized for household loads and may send a large load to the landfill at 3288 Green Pond Highway. Homeowners get 500 pounds a month free there; hardened paint counts as part of your load.
No local outlet for oil-based paint
We found no Colleton County hazardous waste day. SC DES says oil-based paint should go to a household hazardous waste program. Charleston County's centers take it, but only from Charleston County residents.
City trash runs twice a week
The City of Walterboro collects garbage twice a week. Its pages don't say anything about paint, so follow the county rule and harden it first. Call 843-782-1065 with questions.
