THE LOCAL ANSWERTake your paint to an Orangeburg County collection center, such as Glover Street (490 Glover St.) or Ruf Road (221 Ruf Rd.), any day except Wednesday or Sunday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Both latex and oil-based paint are taken. PaintCare's listing says to set paint on the pallet under the shed; empty, dried-out cans go in the compactor.
This guide is for Orangeburg, South Carolina, in Orangeburg County. The county takes both latex and oil-based paint at its 21 staffed collection centers. Four of them are in the Orangeburg area: Glover Street, Ruf Road, Bozard Road and North Road. All are closed Wednesday and Sunday.
Oil-based paint is taken here too
SC DES lists Orangeburg County's centers as taking both latex and oil-based paint. That is different from Richland County around Columbia, whose drop-off centers take only latex paint (up to 5 gallons) and turn away hazardous waste. You don't need to sort paint types before you go.
Wednesday is the day off
Every center is closed Wednesday and Sunday. On the other five days they are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., late enough for an after-work stop.
Pallet for paint, compactor for empties
PaintCare's listing for the county says full paint goes on the pallet under the shed. Empty and dried-out cans can go in the compactor with the trash. Leaking cans are not taken, so put a weak can inside a bigger bucket.
Pick the center for your other stuff
Glover Street is the only center that takes farmer oil (up to 55 gallons). North Road, Town of North, Neeses, Holly Hill 1, Bowman and Santee take TVs and computers. Five Chop Road in Santee is the only one for oil and gas mix.
City trash carts are not for paint
The City of Orangeburg says not to put dangerous materials or liquids in your cart. If you dry out latex as SC DES describes, ask city Sanitation at 803-533-6010 before setting it out.
