This guide is for Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston County takes both latex and oil-based paint for free at its staffed convenience centers. Two centers with Charleston addresses are Bees Ferry Road and Signal Point Road on James Island. The Romney Street center is closed. Bring a photo ID that shows you live in Charleston County.
Don’t put paint in your city cart
The City of Charleston lists paint as hazardous waste that can’t go in your garbage or trash. The city doesn’t collect it. Take it to a Charleston County convenience center instead.
Bring your liquid paint, not dried cans
Charleston County takes leftover paint at its centers, but not empty or dried-out paint cans. So there’s no need to dry latex here. Keep it liquid and sealed and drop it off.
Romney Street is closed
The county’s Romney Street center is closed. City residents can use Bees Ferry (Monday–Saturday) or Signal Point Road on James Island (Tuesday–Saturday, 10–6).
Bring ID, and book a trailer
Every center checks that you live in Charleston County. Bring a photo ID. A utility or tax bill also counts if you show it with a photo ID. Since November 1, 2024, double-axle trailers, box trucks and moving vans need an appointment. Call 843-720-7111.
Cainhoy addresses may be in Berkeley County
Parts of the city in the Cainhoy area are in Berkeley County. If your ID or tax bill shows Berkeley County, the Charleston County centers may turn you away. Check with Berkeley County’s solid waste office first.
