Which option fits your Florence cleanout?4
01

You have three half-used gallons of wall paint after repainting a bedroom

Stir an equal amount of clay cat litter into each can, add more if it's still soft after 10 minutes, and let it set up. Once it's solid, put the lids back on and put the cans out with your household garbage.

03

You're clearing out a garage with oil-based stain, thinner and old motor oil

Motor oil can go to a city fire station oil site (up to 5 gallons per trip) or a county site. No Florence-area site lists oil-based stain or thinner. Keep those closed and call 843-413-3013. SC DES says oil-based paint belongs in a household hazardous waste program.

04

You live in the Pamplico or Timmonsville area

The county's 15 staffed sites include Site 5 Pamplico (411 South Oak Street), Site 10 Hannah (3648 Tree Haven, Pamplico), Site 4 Timmonsville (1840 S Warren Street) and Site 15 Cussac (5169 Sardis Highway, Timmonsville). All are open Monday–Saturday 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Paint isn't on their lists, and Sites 10 and 15 don't take tires. Call 843-413-3013 before bringing dried paint.

Florence rules and tips5
THE LOCAL ANSWER

In Florence, South Carolina, dry leftover latex paint with cat litter until it's solid, then put it out with your household garbage, as the state's environmental agency (SC DES) advises. Donate unopened cans to the Greater Florence Habitat ReStore (843-292-0570). For oil-based paint, stain or thinner, the sources we checked show no Florence-area collection, so call Florence County Waste Management at 843-413-3013.

In Florence, South Carolina, the sources we checked show no paint drop-off. South Carolina has no PaintCare program. The City of Florence's pages and the state's Florence County listing show no household hazardous waste site or paint collection day, and Florence County's own website has no solid waste page we could find. The 15 staffed county drop-off sites don't list paint either. So follow South Carolina's state advice: dry leftover latex and put it out with your household garbage. Give sealed, unopened cans to the Greater Florence Habitat ReStore on Celebration Blvd. For oil-based paint, call Florence County Waste Management first, because no local collection is posted.

No paint drop-off shows up in the sources

South Carolina isn't a PaintCare state, and PaintCare's locator has no listing in Florence County. The state's list of what the 15 county sites collect has no paint on it. The city's recycling page only says paint must be "disposed of properly." For latex, SC DES says that means drying it and putting it out with household garbage.

The state's drying steps

SC DES says: take the lid off and let small amounts air-dry somewhere with good airflow, away from kids and pets. For more paint, stir in an equal amount of clay cat litter. If it's still soft after 10 minutes, add more. Sawdust, shredded paper or a store-bought paint hardener also work. Once it's dry, put the lid back on and throw it out with your household garbage.

Unopened cans can go to the ReStore

The Greater Florence Habitat ReStore at 1354 Celebration Blvd. takes unopened cans of paint and paint supplies. It does not take used or open paint, or chemicals. It's open Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and asks donors to call 843-292-0570 to schedule a pickup.

Oil-based paint has no posted local outlet

SC DES says most experts recommend taking oil-based paint to a household hazardous waste program or event. Its Florence County listing shows none. Keep the can sealed and call Florence County Waste Management (843-413-3013 or 843-413-3001) to ask what it currently allows.

Which county site takes what

All 15 sites are open Monday–Saturday 7 a.m.–7 p.m. and closed Sunday. Only Site 12, Ebenezer (359 South Ebenezer Road), takes oil and gasoline mixtures. Electronics go to Sites 7 (Lake City), 9 (Effingham), 12 and 14 (Johnsonville). Tires are not taken at Sites 8, 10 and 15. None of these lists include paint.

Free pickup programs and other options

Use paint up: SC DES suggests using leftovers as a primer coat or giving usable paint to a school, community group or theater group. The state's recycling guide says some counties take latex or oil-based paint for recycling or reuse, but the Florence County listing doesn't show that here. For motor oil (not paint), the city's fire station oil sites on E. Marion Street and S. Edisto Drive take up to 5 gallons per trip from households. PaintCare's locator shows no sites in Florence County. It lists some other South Carolina county programs, but those are non-program listings, not PaintCare drop-offs.

Latex: open the can and let a small amount dry, or mix in an equal amount of clay cat litter until it's thick and solid. Put the lid back on once it's dry, as SC DES advises. Unopened cans for the ReStore should be sealed and never opened. Oil-based paint and thinner: keep them in closed containers until Florence County tells you where they can go.

Florence questions5
Can I put paint in my City of Florence recycling bin?

No. The city's recycling list says no hazardous household materials, and it names paint. It says paint must be disposed of properly. For latex, SC DES says to dry it and put it out with your household garbage.

Does Florence, SC have a household hazardous waste day?

None is posted. The city and the state's Florence County listing don't show one, and PaintCare's locator has no Florence County event. Call Florence County Waste Management at 843-413-3013 to ask.

Will the Florence ReStore take my leftover paint?

Only if the can is unopened. The Greater Florence Habitat ReStore takes unopened cans of paint but says it can't take used or open paint. Call 843-292-0570 to set up a pickup.

Can I take dried paint to a Florence County drop-off site?

No source says. The state's list of what the sites collect doesn't include paint. The county's Public Works office calls them convenience trash sites. Call 843-413-3013 before you bring it. SC DES says dried latex can go out with household garbage.

Is this the Florence in South Carolina?

Yes. This guide covers Florence, South Carolina, and Florence County, SC. Florence, Alabama has different rules, and this guide doesn't cover them.

Sources and how we checked10

October 17, 2026: read the City of Florence Let's Talk Trash, Recycle Florence and Sanitation Division pages; SC DES's Florence County recycling locations page and its What Can I Recycle? paint answers; the DHEC/PalmettoPride residential recycling guide (PDF, read with pdftotext); Florence County's Public Works page (in the in-app browser); and the Greater Florence Habitat ReStore page. Florence County's own site has no solid waste or landfill page that I could find, and the city's code is not on Municode. Checked data/paintcare/sites.json: no Florence County listings. South Carolina isn't on PaintCare's state list. Source differences: SC DES's FAQ says to put the lid back on dried paint, while the residential guide only says to throw it out once dry. The city's Let's Talk Trash page says each home gets a 95-gallon cart, while the Sanitation Division page says 96-gallon carts were issued when curbside service began in 1982. The city describes Site 8 as on Old Georgetown Rd. next to the County Landfill, while SC DES gives 2616 Papermill Road. Local facts are thin: no city or county page mentions a hazardous waste day or paint at county sites. Unresolved (needs a phone call): whether Florence County has any outlet for oil-based paint; whether county sites take dried latex; and whether residents outside the city can use any landfill directly. No phone calls were made.
