Accepts
Oil-based paint, stain, varnish, lacquer, thinner, turpentine, linseed oil, caulk and glue, partly full spray paint and other household hazardous waste. Latex, acrylic and other water-based paint is not taken.
Who can use it
A 2026 Buckrail story on the county’s season says the grants reduce costs for Teton County residents and local businesses. PaintCare’s non-program listing says households and businesses in Teton County. Everyone needs an appointment.
Hours
By appointment only. The county says it collects twice a month, mid-April through mid-October. The 2026 season started April 15, and the last date on the county’s 2026 brochure is set for Oct. 21. After the season ends, the facility is closed until spring.
Load limits
No container larger than five gallons, no drums or gas cylinders. Not taken: ammunition, explosives, asbestos, medical, radioactive or biological waste. The county’s state permit limits how much it can collect and on how many days.
Fees
Flammable paint: $5 a gallon or $1.25 a quart. Aerosols: $2 each. Grants cut fees by 33%. The county asks businesses to pay the reduced fee and residents to pay what they can afford.

The drop-off is the brown garage-style building on the south side of the Recycling Center property, not the Trash Transfer Station. Book online at tetoncountywy.gov/HHW; appointments fill early. Turn off your engine, stay in your vehicle and let staff unload. No phones or smoking. If you can’t make your slot, call 307-733-7678 so someone else can use it.

The station is at Horsethief Canyon, about four miles south of Jackson on US 26/89/191, on the east side of the road. Teton County has no active landfill nearby; the county says trash is shipped 100 miles to a landfill in Idaho (Bonneville County, per a 2024 county release reported by Buckrail), which is why liquids and chemicals are banned here.

Jackson rules and tips5
THE LOCAL ANSWER

In Jackson, Wyoming, dry latex paint with kitty litter (one part litter to two parts paint) and take it to the Teton County Trash Transfer Station at Horsethief Canyon, 5400 W. US Hwy 89. Oil-based paint needs a booked appointment at the county’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 3270 S. Adams Canyon Rd. (tetoncountywy.gov/HHW or 307-733-7678), which runs mid-April to mid-October; if you miss this season, store the cans sealed until spring. Don’t take liquid paint or oil-based paint to the Transfer Station.

Jackson, Wyoming (Teton County, Jackson Hole) handles paint in two ways. Oil-based paint goes to Teton County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility on S. Adams Canyon Road, which opens by appointment only, twice a month, from mid-April to mid-October. Latex is dried solid and taken to the Trash Transfer Station at Horsethief Canyon. This guide is for Jackson, Wyoming, not Jackson, Mississippi. Wyoming has no PaintCare program.

Oil-based paint waits for spring

Teton County collects hazardous waste only twice a month, mid-April to mid-October, under a Wyoming DEQ permit that limits how much and how often. Once the season ends, the county suggests storing chemicals safely in a corner of a shed or garage until spring.

Book early

Appointments open online ahead of the season (for 2025, the county said March), and the county says they fill early. In 2026 the season began April 15. If you can’t make your slot, call 307-733-7678 so someone else can have it.

Pay by the gallon, or what you can

Flammable paint costs $5 a gallon or $1.25 a quart, and aerosols $2 each. Grants from the Brinson Foundation, Teton Conservation District and Teton County Weed and Pest cut fees by 33%. Businesses pay the reduced fee; residents are asked to pay what they can afford.

Take dried latex to the Transfer Station

The county’s latex-drying page says to take dried latex to the Trash Transfer Station because trash haulers will no longer collect it. The 2026 brochure words this step differently, so don’t count on curbside pickup in Jackson Hole; ask your hauler or call 307-733-7678 if you want to try it.

Why the rules are strict here

Teton County has no active landfill nearby. The county says its trash is shipped 100 miles to a landfill in Idaho (Bonneville County, per a 2024 county release), and oil-based paint, thinners and other chemicals are banned from the Transfer Station and that landfill.

Free pickup programs and other options

Wyoming has no PaintCare program, so stores don’t take back paint. Give usable paint to a neighbor or community group. Small amounts of latex can be dried with kitty litter. Empty spray cans can be recycled with cans; partly full ones go to hazardous waste. The Recycling Center office at 3270 S. Adams Canyon Rd. (weekdays 9–5) answers questions at 307-733-7678. Wyoming DEQ says never to pour chemicals into storm drains or street gutters.

For latex: take the lid off, stir, mix in one part kitty litter, floor dry or bentonite to two parts paint until it’s like thick oatmeal, and leave it open about 24 hours. For a hazardous waste appointment: list what you have, keep everything in original or labeled containers no bigger than five gallons, and seal the lids. Tarp the load for the Transfer Station.

Jackson questions5
Where do I take oil-based paint in Jackson, Wyoming?

Can I still drop off hazardous waste this year?

Maybe, but plan for spring. The last 2026 collection date on the county brochure is set for Oct. 21, and appointments fill early. If you can’t get a slot, store oil-based paint safely until the facility reopens in mid-April.

Does the hazardous waste facility take latex paint?

No. Dry it with kitty litter and take it to the Trash Transfer Station south of Jackson as trash.

What does it cost?

Flammable paint is $5 a gallon or $1.25 a quart, and aerosols are $2 each. Businesses pay the posted fee, which grants reduce. Residents are asked to pay what they can.

What are the Transfer Station’s winter hours?

From mid-October to mid-May: Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–3 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.–noon.

Sources and how we checked14

October 16, 2026: read Teton County ISWR’s Household Hazardous Waste, appointment, fees, paint and latex-drying pages, the 2026 HHW brochure (PDF), the Trash Transfer Station page and brochure, the holiday schedule, the Recycling page, Buckrail notices from April 23, 2026 and Oct. 31, 2024, Wyoming DEQ’s nonpoint source page and the PaintCare locator data (Teton County record listed as a non-program site; facts used only from it are labeled). Unresolved: the county’s drying page says haulers no longer collect dried latex, while the 2026 brochure words it differently, so we point to the Transfer Station and don’t repeat the brochure line. The brochure and Buckrail list three collection dates in September and October although the county says twice a month; the guide repeats only the Oct. 21 end date. We couldn’t see whether any Oct. 21 slots are still open. No paint quantity limit is published apart from the five-gallon container limit. The fee table doesn’t list latex because it isn’t taken.

Checked October 16, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
