In Riverton, Wyoming (Fremont County), paint goes to the Riverton Bale Station at 329 N Smith Rd., run by the Fremont County Solid Waste Disposal District. The district lists latex paint as always free. Oil-based paint has been collected at the district’s yearly hazardous waste day, held this year at the same station on July 25. A 2024 city notice said paint doesn’t belong in city trash carts. Wyoming has no PaintCare program.
Not in the city cart
In a February 2024 public notice, the City of Riverton listed paint and chemicals among items that can’t go in city rollouts or dumpsters. It said carts holding them may not be emptied, or a fee may go on your utility bill. The city’s current sanitation page doesn’t list paint by name; it points to City Code 8.12.010 and says the city doesn’t collect hazardous waste. Questions go to Public Works at 307-856-3687.
Latex is free at any district site with a paint listing
District notices list latex paint as ‘always free and acceptable’ along with recycling, scrap metal and electronics. Besides Riverton, the Lander Landfill and Dubois Landfill pages list paint. The Sand Draw Landfill page doesn’t.
Oil-based paint waits for the July hazardous waste day
The district holds one free hazardous waste day a year, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. It was at the Riverton station on July 25, 2026, and at the Lander Landfill on July 26, 2025. Oil-based paint, solvents and aerosols were taken; explosives, radioactive waste and asbestos weren’t. No 2027 date is posted, so call 307-332-7040 if you can’t wait.
Closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays
The bale station runs Tuesday through Saturday. Coming up, it’s closed Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and closes at noon on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Secure the load or pay $10
Since Nov. 1, 2023, the district charges at least $10 for loads that aren’t covered or tied down, including bagged waste.
