THE LOCAL ANSWERDry out latex paint and put it in your trash: mix in cat litter or oil-dry until the can can be turned upside down without paint pouring out. For oil-based paint, call Tyler Solid Waste at 903-531-1388 about the next paint collection day. No 2026 paint day was found as of October 7, 2026.
Tyler has no year-round paint drop-off and Texas has no PaintCare program. The city's answer for most paint is to dry it and put it in the trash. Liquid paint is only collected on occasional city paint days.
The upside-down test
The city's rule: paint must be dry before it goes to the curb. Add about 2 quarts of oil-dry or cat litter per half-gallon of paint, stir, leave the lid off, and wait until nothing pours out when you flip the can.
Only small amounts of hazardous waste can go in the trash
The city says household hazardous waste can go out with household garbage only in amounts of 32 ounces or less. A gallon of liquid oil-based paint is too much. Greenwood Farms Landfill on FM 2767 is not a hazardous waste drop-off.
Paint days are rare and residents-only
Tyler has run one-day paint collections with Keep Tyler Beautiful. The May 20, 2023 day took latex and oil-based paint, up to 25 gallons per household, with a water bill and driver's license. No painters or businesses. No epoxy or spray paint.
The Downtown Recycle Center is for recycling
Anyone can use it for recycling, but the city lists no paint drop-off there on normal days. Past paint days were held across from it on N. Bois D'Arc Avenue.
