Call the SW 4th Ave hardware store (PaintCare’s listing: Kinney Bros and Keele True Value) at 541-889-7629. PaintCare lists it for up to 80 gallons per visit, which covers this in one trip if it has room. Keep the cans labeled and sealed.
Either store works. Sherwin-Williams on SE 1st Ave takes up to 5 gallons per visit. Call before you go, as PaintCare advises.
The Ontario stores won’t take them. Hold them until you learn of a collection event: call Malheur County Environmental Health at 541-473-5186 or DEQ at 541-633-2029.
PaintCare lists no drop-off in either town, so bring paint to Ontario. Don’t count on the Lytle Boulevard Landfill near Vale; the county doesn’t list paint there and it’s open only three days a week.
Take labeled cans of house paint to Kinney Bros and Keele True Value Hardware at 460 SW 4th Ave (541-889-7629), which PaintCare lists for up to 80 gallons per visit. For 5 gallons or less, Sherwin-Williams at 1289 SE 1st Ave also takes it. Call first; neither takes spray paint.
In Ontario, Oregon (Malheur County, on the Idaho line), leftover paint goes back to one of two PaintCare stores in town. We found no Malheur County household hazardous waste site or collection day. Oregon DEQ’s 2025 report shows all paint collected in the county came in through stores.
PaintCare lists the hardware store at 460 SW 4th Ave for up to 80 gallons per visit; Sherwin-Williams takes 5. If you’re cleaning out a rental or a barn, start at SW 4th Ave and call ahead.
PaintCare lists it as Kinney Bros and Keele True Value Hardware. A 2023 Argus Observer news report said it had been sold to Thatcher’s Ace Hardware and would get new signs. Go by the address, not the sign.
Oregon DEQ’s 2025 report shows all paint collected in Malheur County came in through stores. We found no county hazardous waste site or collection day to fall back on.
Ontario Sanitary Service’s guide lists paint, spray paint cans and plastic paint cans as items its curbside recycling can’t take.
PaintCare stores won’t take aerosols or solvents. For those, ask Malheur County Environmental Health (541-473-5186) about events. Laurie Gordon (541-633-2029) is Oregon DEQ’s household hazardous waste contact for Malheur County.
For 100 gallons or more, PaintCare offers free pickup at View program details ↗ . The county’s Lytle Boulevard Landfill, about 10 miles south of Vale, is open Tuesday and Thursday 1–5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., but the county doesn’t say it takes paint. Call 541-473-5186 before bringing any. Vale and Nyssa have no PaintCare site in PaintCare’s data, so those towns also drive to Ontario.

Keep each can in its original labeled container, 5 gallons or smaller, with the lid on tight. Leave out empty, leaking and unlabeled cans and all spray cans. Call the store first and say how many gallons you have and whether any is oil-based.
Full preparation checklist →At Kinney Bros and Keele True Value Hardware, 460 SW 4th Ave (up to 80 gallons per visit; the sign may now say Ace), or Sherwin-Williams at 1289 SE 1st Ave (up to 5 gallons). Both are PaintCare drop-offs and take latex and oil-based house paint for free.
No. This guide is for Ontario, Oregon, in Malheur County near Payette, Idaho. Ontario, California, has its own rules.
We found no county site and no 2025 or 2026 collection day. Ask Malheur County Environmental Health (541-473-5186) or DEQ’s contact for the county (541-633-2029).
PaintCare lists both stores for households and businesses in Oregon. Idaho has no PaintCare program. Call the store and ask before you bring Idaho paint across the river.
Yes, latex paint. Oil-based paint from a business is only taken if the business is a very small generator under hazardous waste rules. For 100+ gallons, ask PaintCare for a pickup.
October 13, 2026: read PaintCare’s Oregon page and locator data, the Argus Observer report on the store sale (April 26, 2023), Malheur County’s solid waste page, FAQ and recycling depot list, Ontario Sanitary Service’s disposal guide, and Oregon DEQ’s event contacts and 2025 paint volume report. Peer review the same day: we use PaintCare’s name for the SW 4th Ave store; the Ace sale is a 2023 news report, and we read no current store or PaintCare source naming it Ace. We could not find a current Ontario city page on paint, or any Malheur County hazardous waste event in 2025 or 2026. Unresolved: the store’s current sign and hours; whether the Lytle Boulevard Landfill takes dried latex paint; whether the Ontario stores serve Idaho residents.
