This is a place to pick up paint, not a separate drop-off. Ask at the scale whether anything is on hand before you drive out.
Your state doesn’t have a PaintCare program, so stores here don’t take paint for free. These are the public drop-off programs PaintCare’s map lists, closest first. Most only serve their own residents and some charge a fee. Call before you go.

If a can is still good, bring it to the landfill drop. Staff may put usable items out at the free exchange. If it is junk, the Special Wastes page says crews will take paint stirred with kitty litter or cement powder until solid. The 2026 rules sheet bans paint from carts, though, so call Public Works at 701-857-4140 first.
Keep both in their labeled cans and call the landfill at 701-857-4719 to ask about winter paint drop-off. Then go Monday–Saturday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and stop at the scale.
The free drop-off is for City of Minot garbage customers. The rates page lists household hazardous waste as free without saying who qualifies. Ask at the scale before you unload.
Minot says debris and bulk items tenants leave behind are the owner’s job and can’t go to the curb. Household amounts of paint can go to the landfill drop. PaintCare’s listing says the drop is for households only, not businesses. For a large amount, or paint from a business, call the landfill at 701-857-4719 before you load up.
Take liquid paint to the household hazardous waste drop at the City of Minot Landfill, 4450 37th Ave SW, and stop at the scale. It is free for City of Minot garbage customers. Winter hours are Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; call 701-857-4719 first, since one city page says liquid paint is taken during summer hours.
In Minot, North Dakota (Ward County), liquid paint goes to the household hazardous waste drop at the City of Minot Landfill, 4450 37th Ave SW. It is free for City of Minot garbage customers. Usable paint that comes in may be put out for anyone to take for free. North Dakota has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don’t take paint back.
The landfill is open Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., until April 10, 2027. The city’s main hazardous waste page says the drop is open year-round. But its Special Wastes page and PaintCare’s listing tie liquid paint to summer hours. Call the landfill at 701-857-4719 before a winter trip.
The 2026 collection rules say paint and other hazardous waste go in free for City of Minot garbage customers. If you live outside the city or have private trash service, ask the scale attendant what applies to you.
The Special Wastes page says crews will take paint mixed with cement powder or kitty litter into a solid mass, and empty paint cans. The landfill drop is also an exchange. Items staff think are still good are given away free. Ask at the scale if any paint or stain is on hand.
Minot’s 2026 spring cleanup (May 4–8) and fall cleanup (September 14–18) are over. Crews don’t pick up paint, stain or varnish set out at the curb during cleanup weeks. The one-time hazardous waste event at Public Works ran May 8–9, 2026. The landfill drop is the place the rest of the year.
Use paint up or give it to someone who will use it. The North Dakota Department of Agriculture also lists churches, daycares, theater groups and recreation departments as places that may take leftover paint. Latex you can’t use can be dried with kitty litter or cement powder. PaintCare’s listing says Bismarck’s center is for Bismarck households only, so Minot residents should start at their own landfill. PaintCare lists the Minot drop for households only. A business can call the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality at 701-328-5150.

Keep paint in its original can with the lid on tight. Pack cans upright in a box. Cover or tarp your load, or the landfill can turn it back. For latex you will throw out, stir in kitty litter or cement powder until it is solid, and dry it outdoors away from kids and pets.

October 16, 2026: read the City of Minot’s Hazardous Waste Collection, Special Wastes, Landfill, Landfill Rates, Spring & Fall Clean Up, General Topics and Solid Waste Management pages, the 2026 Collection Rules & Landfill Schedule PDF, ND DEQ’s household hazardous waste page (it lists Minot as a community program), the North Dakota Department of Agriculture’s household waste tips, and PaintCare’s locator data (site 14691). Conflicts: the HHW page and 2026 PDF say the drop is open year-round, while the Special Wastes page says liquid paint goes there during summer hours and PaintCare says residential amounts only during summer hours. The 2026 PDF says the drop is free for city garbage customers only; the rates page lists household hazardous waste as free with no limit on who. The Special Wastes page says solidified paint and empty cans will be picked up; the 2026 PDF lists paint/paint cans as banned from carts. The city also gives a second landfill location note (2.5 miles west of Walmart) in the PDF. Peer review (October 16, 2026): every source re-read; the cart conflict is now shown as a conflict, not as a yes. Unresolved: winter paint intake, what non-customers pay, exchange hours, and whether the Ward County rural areas have any other option.
