Pack cans in a lined box and put the box in the trunk. Keep products in their original containers with lids tight. If a can leaks, put it in a bigger container with cat litter. West Fargo’s page says the site is along Seventh Avenue N., east of the landfill. PaintCare’s listing adds that it is on the south side of 7th Ave., east of the landfill and compost site. A free reuse room offers paint, stain and varnish others dropped off; you sign a liability waiver first. Hazardous waste is not picked up during the city’s spring Clean Up Week.

Fargo rules and tips5
THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take paint to Fargo’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 606 43 1/2 St. N., any weekday (Wednesday until 6) or the second Saturday of the month. It’s free for Fargo, West Fargo and other Cass County residents, also serves Valley City, and takes latex and oil-based paint. Moorhead residents use Clay County’s site instead.

In Fargo, North Dakota, leftover paint goes to the city’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 606 43 1/2 St. N., just east of the landfill. It’s free for Fargo and Cass County residents and also serves Valley City. It takes latex and oil-based paint. North Dakota has no PaintCare program; across the river in Moorhead, Minnesota, the rules are different.

Weekdays, plus one Saturday a month

Drive in Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday 9–5, or Wednesday until 6. On Saturdays it opens only on the second Saturday of the month, 8 a.m.–noon. It’s closed on legal holidays.

West Fargo uses the same site

West Fargo doesn’t collect hazardous waste at the curb. Its own page sends residents to Fargo’s facility, free of charge.

Up to 220 pounds a month

Fargo takes household amounts, up to 220 pounds per home per month. Latex, oil-based paint, stain, varnish, spray paint and thinner are all on its list.

Moorhead residents go to Clay County

Fargo’s page tells Moorhead residents to call the Clay County facility at 218-299-5077. Clay County takes waste from Clay County homes only. PaintCare’s locator lists a Sherwin-Williams at 3314 US Hwy 10 E in Moorhead for Minnesota households and businesses; it doesn’t list North Dakota customers.

Free paint in the reuse room

Usable paint, stain and varnish that others drop off go in a reuse room, free. You sign a liability waiver before you take anything.

Free pickup programs and other options

There is no free store take-back in North Dakota. Fargo’s pages don’t say whether liquid latex can be dried and put in your garbage, so bring it to the hazardous waste site, which takes it for free. Empty, dry paint cans are different: they go in your garbage with the lid off, and the facility won’t take them. The state DEQ says to use products up or give leftovers to neighbors, businesses or charities before you throw them away.

Keep paint in its original can with the lid on tight. Pack the cans in a box lined with a plastic bag and put it in the trunk. If a can leaks, set it in a bigger container with cat litter. Keep a count so you stay under 220 pounds for the month.

Sources and how we checked14

October 13, 2026: read the City of Fargo HHW pages (main, hours and location, acceptable and unacceptable items, product reuse, businesses, transporting, amounts), the Clean Up Week and garbage rules pages, West Fargo’s HHW page, Clay County’s HHW page, ND DEQ’s household hazardous waste page and flood guidance, and PaintCare’s locator data. Fargo’s hours page carries an old holiday closure note whose weekdays match an earlier year, so the guide tells readers to call about holiday closures instead of repeating it. Fargo’s pages don’t say whether ID is checked, don’t publish business fees, and don’t say whether dried latex can go in the garbage, so we don’t say it can. The amounts page (2016 data) shows latex was the second-biggest item collected. PaintCare lists a Moorhead Sherwin-Williams for Minnesota households and businesses; that rests only on PaintCare’s listing, and we did not confirm whether the store would take North Dakota paint. No mobile events were listed. Peer review, October 13, 2026: reopened every source. Fargo’s page says the site is free for Fargo and Cass County residents and that Valley City residents can use it, but doesn’t say Valley City use is free, so the guide no longer says so. The Seventh Avenue directions now come from West Fargo’s page and PaintCare’s listing.
