This is a place to pick up paint, not a separate drop-off. You drop off through the hazardous waste center, where non-residents pay per pound. KFYR-TV reported in September 2025 that the room opened about 20 years ago and that the program led to the reuse of seven tons of latex paint in 2024.
Your state doesn’t have a PaintCare program, so stores here don’t take paint for free. These are the public drop-off programs PaintCare’s map lists, closest first. Most only serve their own residents and some charge a fee. Call before you go.

From PaintCare’s drop-off map ↗, updated October 6, 2026. Hours and limits are PaintCare’s. Distances are straight-line, not driving.
Box them upright in a bag-lined box and drive to 52nd Street on a weekday or the 1st or 3rd Saturday. Show ID; it’s free.
Skip the drive. Mix in cat litter or floor-dry, let it harden, take the lid off, and put the can in a bag inside your garbage tote.
Bring it to the Bismarck center. You’ll pay $2.43 a pound as a non-resident, so bring only what you can’t use or give away.
Check the Re-Use Room at the center first. Usable paint and stain are free to anyone with ID.
Take paint to Bismarck’s Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center at the landfill, 2111 N. 52nd St.; stop at the scale house and bring ID. It’s free for people inside Bismarck city limits; others pay $1.83/lb for latex and $2.43/lb for oil-based. Open weekdays and the 1st and 3rd Saturday.
In Bismarck, North Dakota, latex and oil-based paint go to the city’s Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center at the landfill, 2111 N. 52nd St. It’s free if you live inside Bismarck city limits. Everyone else, including Mandan residents, pays by the pound. North Dakota has no PaintCare program.
Bismarck residents pay nothing. Non-residents pay $1.83 a pound for latex and $2.43 a pound for oil-based paint or stain (2026 prices). Bring ID either way.
Mandan’s garbage service won’t take liquid paint. It does take paint that is fully dried, with the lid off, in a bag inside the tote. Mandan’s pages don’t split latex from oil-based. For paint you can’t dry, Mandan’s hazardous waste page points to the Bismarck center.
The Re-Use Room inside the center gives away usable paint and stain for free. Bring ID. KFYR-TV reported that the program reused seven tons of latex paint in 2024.
Besides weekdays, the center opens the 1st and 3rd Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop at the scale house first, then unload at Door #8.
Bismarck’s 2025 spring cleanup week notice listed paint and stains among items crews would not take and sent them to the center. Plan on the center, not the curb.
There is no free store take-back in North Dakota. Bismarck’s own pages don’t say whether dried latex can go in a Bismarck garbage can, so Bismarck residents should use the free center. Mandan residents can dry paint with cat litter or floor-dry and put the open can in a bag in the tote, which avoids Bismarck’s per-pound fee. Unlike Fargo, whose center PaintCare lists for households and businesses, Bismarck’s center takes no business hazardous waste.

Keep paint in original cans with lids shut, nothing over 5 gallons. Line a box with a plastic trash bag, stand the cans upright in it, and tarp or tie down the load ($25 fee otherwise). Bring a valid ID.

October 13, 2026: read the City of Bismarck Recycling page (HHW tab), the HHW and electronics pricing flyer effective Jan. 1, 2026, the Landfill page, the Public Works FAQ, the 2025 Spring Cleanup Week notice; Mandan’s Hazardous Waste, Garbage Collection and Spring Clean-Up pages; ND DEQ’s household hazardous waste page; KFYR-TV’s September 2025 reuse room story; and PaintCare’s locator data. Hours conflict: the current city page, FAQ and 2026 flyer say Monday–Friday 7–3; the 2025 notice and KFYR say Monday–Thursday 8–3; Mandan’s page says Tuesdays and Thursdays; PaintCare says weekdays 8–3. We use the city’s current page and tell readers to call. The city doesn’t list separate Re-Use Room hours. Bismarck doesn’t say whether dried latex can go in its garbage cans. Mandan’s pages don’t split latex from oil-based; they say any paint must be dried with the lid off, and the clean-up page says dried paint can also go to the Mandan landfill. Peer review removed Lincoln and “rural Burleigh County” by name (no source places them) and a claim that Mandan’s landfill takes no hazardous waste (the page’s “no hazardous waste” line is about clean-up week pickup). ND DEQ lists Bismarck but not Mandan among community programs. Mandan’s clean-up page has two conflicting sets of April landfill dates; spring clean-up is past either way.
