THE LOCAL ANSWERCall City of Scottsbluff Environmental Services at 308-630-0985 (weekdays 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and ask where to bring your paint; KSGB says the city takes paint all year. KSGB also says small amounts of latex can be dried with kitty litter or sawdust and thrown away. Save stains, varnishes and thinners for KSGB's spring collection, which takes those but not paint.
Scottsbluff, Nebraska, has a year-round paint option, but the word comes from Keep Scottsbluff Gering Beautiful (KSGB), not the city. KSGB says the City of Scottsbluff's Environmental Services takes paint all year. KSGB's own spring hazardous waste day refuses paint but takes stains, varnishes and thinners. Nebraska has no PaintCare program, so there is no PaintCare store drop-off network here.
Paint and stain go to different places
KSGB's 2026 flier lists 'Stains & Varnishes (No Paint)'. Thinners, gasoline and kerosene are also taken at its spring collection. Paint itself goes to the City of Scottsbluff Environmental Services instead. Sort your shelf into paint and stain/varnish/solvent before you load the car.
The city's own pages don't mention paint
KSGB's disposal guide and a 2024 KSGB release say Environmental Services takes paint. The city's sanitation pages list recycling, electronics and trash rules but say nothing about paint. Call 308-630-0985 to confirm where to bring it, which kinds it takes and whether there's a fee.
Gering and Terrytown: check before you drive
KSGB's guide says the city takes paint from "Nebraska residents only." The city's recycling page says its depot is for City of Scottsbluff residents and businesses only. If you live in Gering, Terrytown or anywhere outside Scottsbluff city limits, call 308-630-0985 before you go. The April 2026 Free Landfill Day at the Gering Landfill, run by Scottsbluff, Gering and Terrytown, didn't allow hazardous waste.
Not in the roll-out or construction dumpster
Scottsbluff says trash roll-outs and dumpsters are for household trash only. Its 1.5-cubic-yard construction dumpsters ($76.50 a month) ban hazardous waste outright, and the crew won't dump a can with banned items in it. KSGB points paint to Environmental Services instead.
North Platte has a standing hazardous waste site
Nebraska's household hazardous waste directory (revised September 2026) lists North Platte's site at 1308 N. Sycamore, open the 2nd and 4th Thursday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (308-535-6740). PaintCare's non-program listing for it (not the city) says households only in North Platte and Lincoln County, so Scottsbluff residents should call first.
