Maine has a free paint recycling program called PaintCare. Many paint and hardware stores take leftover house paint, stain and varnish at no charge.

Augusta ↗
Hatch Hill landfill takes household paint Tuesday–Saturday from permit holders in Augusta and eight nearby towns. No permit? PaintCare stores on Bangor Street and Western Avenue take it. The area's 2026 hazardous waste day was in May.

Bangor has no city paint drop-off and no current hazardous waste day. Oil-based paint goes to PaintCare stores on Hammond Street and Broadway. Fully dried latex can go in the trash.

Portland's hazardous waste site is Riverside Recycling, which takes it on first Saturdays, April to November. The last 2026 date is November 7. Other days, PaintCare hardware stores take house paint. ecomaine's trash plant takes no paint.
