Use a PaintCare store like Aubuchon Hardware, 10 Bangor Street. The May 16 regional hazardous waste day is past; the Lewiston Depot's last 2026 date is October 17.
Hatch Hill landfill takes household paint Tuesday–Saturday from permit holders in Augusta and eight nearby towns. No permit? PaintCare stores on Bangor Street and Western Avenue take it. The area's 2026 hazardous waste day was in May.
Every customer needs one: $15 per home vehicle for two calendar years, sold at the scale house or City Center, or a 3-trip pass for Augusta residents. PaintCare lists paint drop-off for households in Augusta, Chelsea, Farmingdale, Gardiner, Hallowell, Manchester, Pittston, Randolph and Whitefield.
The May 16 drop-off day at Augusta Public Works, 55 North Street, served Augusta, Farmingdale, Gardiner, Hallowell and Manchester. Gardiner's notice required signing up and paying ahead. We found no fall 2026 repeat.
Hatch Hill's FAQ links to the Maine Environmental Depot at an address that's now a domain-for-sale page. AVCOG posts the Lewiston schedule now: monthly through October 17, 8–11:45 a.m., $50 per unit for towns outside its region.
PaintCare says Hatch Hill takes empty containers, which most PaintCare stores won't. Leaking or unlabeled cans and spray cans are still out.
Sherwin-Williams at 68 Western Avenue is another PaintCare store. Transfer stations in Readfield (also serving Fayette and Wayne), Winthrop (Marshall Hills, 10 gallons per visit) and Belgrade take paint only from their own towns' households. Large loads of 100 gallons or more qualify for free PaintCare pickup.

Keep paint sealed and labeled, in containers of 5 gallons or less. At Hatch Hill, stop at the scale house with your permit or pass. Keep thinners and spray cans aside for a hazardous waste day.
