Dry them out for the trash, or take them liquid to a PaintCare store. With more than a few cans, the store is easier.
The city calls these hazardous. Take them sealed and labeled to Color Concepts or Sherwin-Williams on Broadway.
PaintCare stores won't take these. Call Maine DEP's Bangor office, or go to AVCOG's Lewiston Depot on October 17 ($50 per 5-gallon or 20-pound unit for non-member towns). Sign-up for the state's free October pesticide collection closed September 30.
PaintCare stores take business paint within PaintCare's rules; oil-based business paint must meet the rules for very small businesses. For 100 gallons or more, ask for a large-volume pickup.
Take oil-based paint, stain, varnish and liquid latex to a PaintCare store like Color Concepts, 840 Hammond Street. Fully dried latex can go in the trash, double-bagged. For thinners and other chemicals, call Maine DEP's Bangor office (207-941-4570). The nearest depot open to everyone is in Lewiston; its last 2026 date is October 17.
Bangor has no city paint drop-off and no current hazardous waste day. Oil-based paint goes to PaintCare stores on Hammond Street and Broadway. Fully dried latex can go in the trash.
Leave the lid off and let latex dry, using cat litter to speed it up, then double-bag the can. Oil-based paint, varnish and polyurethane are hazardous and go to PaintCare. No liquid latex in the curbside cart.
For chemicals beyond paint, the city points to Maine DEP's Bangor office and the Lewiston depot. Brewer's October 3 collection day at Brewer Public Works is past and was only for signed-up Brewer residents. Older news mentions a Bangor collection day; we couldn't confirm it still runs.
The city names Casella's Pinetree Transfer Station, 358 Emerson Mill Road, Hampden, for e-waste, thermostats and fluorescent bulbs. Not paint.
Color Concepts and Aubuchon Hardware in Brewer take 5 gallons per visit. PaintCare shows no limit for Sherwin-Williams on Broadway; ask before bringing more.
Aubuchon Hardware at 484 Wilson Street in Brewer is also a PaintCare site. Hudson's transfer station is one too, but only for Hudson households. Free PaintCare pickup starts at 100 gallons. Each October, the Maine Board of Pesticides Control runs a free collection with a Bangor drop-off; sign-up closes September 30.

Keep paint in original labeled containers, 5 gallons or smaller. Set aside spray cans and solvents; PaintCare stores won't take them. Call ahead to check for room.
Full preparation checklist →Yes, once it's fully dry: lid off, cat litter if needed, then double-bagged. PaintCare stores also take liquid latex free.
To a PaintCare store: Color Concepts on Hammond Street or Sherwin-Williams on Broadway.
Not on the city's page, and Brewer's October 3 day was for Brewer residents only. Call Maine DEP at 207-941-4570, or plan for the Lewiston Depot on October 17.
No. PaintCare takes house paint, stain and clear finishes, not thinners or spray paint.
Read Bangor Public Works, Maine DEP, AVCOG's 2026 schedule, Brewer's 2026 flyer and the PaintCare locator (October 6, 2026). Official pages showed no current Bangor-area hazardous waste day besides Brewer's residents-only one. We didn't check Hampden events, Pinetree's own site, or store hours and space.
