Your house needs exterior paint and you're on a budget

Apply for the SWA's one-time recycled paint donation if you own and live in a single-family home of 3,000 square feet or less. Pressure-wash the house first, and don't use the paint in a sprayer.

West Palm Beach rules and tips5
THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take leftover paint to the SWA Home Chemical & Recycling Center, 6161 N. Jog Road, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (staffed) or Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (self-service). It's free for Palm Beach County residents. The City of West Palm Beach says paint left in the can is hazardous waste and must not go in your garbage.

In West Palm Beach, Florida, paint goes to the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (SWA). Its Home Chemical & Recycling Center on North Jog Road takes paint for free from Palm Beach County residents six days a week. This is a different system from Broward County's to the south; you don't need to wait for a collection event.

Seven free drop-offs in the county

The SWA runs seven Home Chemical & Recycling Centers. For West Palm Beach, the closest are Jog Road (6161 N. Jog Rd.), Royal Palm Beach (9743 Weisman Way) and Lantana (1810 Lantana Rd.). Others are in Jupiter, eastern and western Delray Beach, and Belle Glade.

Weekday if you want help

Jog Road is staffed Monday through Friday and self-serve on Saturday. The SWA lists Royal Palm Beach and Lantana as self-service centers, so you unload yourself there. If you have a lot of paint or heavy buckets, go to Jog Road on a weekday. Lantana closes at noon on Saturday, and Belle Glade is closed Saturday.

The city and SWA advice don't match on latex

The City of West Palm Beach lists latex paint as hazardous waste that can't go in regular garbage; only empty, dry cans can. PaintCare's listing for the SWA says small amounts of latex can be dried with sand, cat litter or sawdust and thrown out. Since you pick up a city cart, follow the city: take liquid latex to an SWA center.

Free recycled paint for some homeowners

The SWA gives out exterior latex recycled paint, one time only, to Palm Beach County owners of single-family homes up to 3,000 square feet, plus nonprofits and agencies. You choose a base and a trim color, and approval takes four to six weeks. Call 561-640-4000.

Not the landfill drop-off

The Customer Convenience Drop-Off Center at 6330 N. Jog Rd. weighs your trash and charges a tipping fee. The free chemical center is across the street at 6161. Make sure you're in the right line.

Free pickup programs and other options

Florida has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don't take old paint back for free. In Palm Beach County, the SWA centers are your free option, and there is no curbside pickup for hazardous waste. Small businesses and nonprofits that make little hazardous waste can register for the SWA's VSQG program, book an appointment and pay a disposal fee (561-697-2700, option 3). Broward County sites, like those in the Pompano Beach guide, are for Broward residents.

Keep paint in its original container with the lid on tight. Don't mix products. Put any leaking can inside a second sealed container. Carry everything upright in the trunk or truck bed. The centers are free only for Palm Beach County residents. Empty, dry cans can go in your city garbage.

West Palm Beach questions5
Where do I drop off paint in West Palm Beach?

At the SWA Home Chemical & Recycling Center, 6161 N. Jog Road. It's open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (self-service).

Is paint drop-off free?

Yes, for Palm Beach County residents, at any of the seven SWA centers.

Can I put latex paint in my West Palm Beach garbage?

Not if there's paint left in the can. The city says latex paint is hazardous waste. Empty, dry cans can go in regular garbage.

Is there a limit on how much paint I can bring?

The SWA doesn't list a paint limit. PaintCare's listing says you may be asked questions if you bring 20 gallons or more. For a big load, call 561-697-2700, option 3 first.

Can I get free paint from the SWA?

Maybe. Single-family homeowners in Palm Beach County can apply once for free exterior recycled latex paint for homes up to 3,000 square feet.

Sources and how we checked10

Checked October 16, 2026: the SWA hazardous waste page (what centers take, quantity caps, VSQG steps, no curbside hazardous pickup), SWA facility pages for the Jog Road, Royal Palm Beach, Lantana, western Delray Beach, Belle Glade and landfill drop-off sites (hours, staffed vs self-service), the SWA recycled paint donation application, the City of West Palm Beach A-Z guide (latex and oil paint listed as hazardous; empty, dry cans in garbage), Florida DEP, and PaintCare's listings. Unresolved: the SWA's own pages don't give a paint gallon limit; PaintCare mentions questions at 20 or more gallons. The dried-latex advice appears in PaintCare's SWA listings but we did not find it on swa.org, and the city says the opposite. The SWA lists both 561-697-2700 and 561-640-4000. Peer review (October 16, 2026): the SWA's own pages list Royal Palm Beach and Lantana as self-service; the no-empty-cans rule and the Royal Palm Beach quantity note come only from PaintCare. The city's sanitation line is 561-822-2075. We did not find a Habitat ReStore in the county that says it takes paint.

Checked October 16, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
