THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take leftover paint to the SWA Home Chemical & Recycling Center at 13400 S. State Road 7 (staffed weekdays, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or 1901 SW 4th Ave. (self-service). Both are open Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are free for Palm Beach County residents. Delray's city code bans trash with undrained liquids from garbage carts.

Delray Beach, Florida, has two of the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County's seven free chemical drop-offs inside the city: an eastern one on SW 4th Avenue and a western one on State Road 7. The City of Delray Beach sends residents to these two for oil-based paint and other hazardous waste. Both are free for Palm Beach County residents, six days a week.

East is self-serve, west has staff on weekdays

The SWA lists the eastern center at the South County Transfer Station (1901 SW 4th Ave.) as self-service, so you unload yourself. The western center at the Southwest County Transfer Station (13400 S. State Road 7) is staffed Monday to Friday and self-service on Saturday. For heavy buckets, go west on a weekday.

The city code is strict about liquids

Delray Beach's code (Sec. 51.40) makes it unlawful to put trash that hasn't been drained of all liquids in a garbage container. WM, the city's hauler, lists paint as household hazardous waste that can't go in your cart. Take liquid paint to an SWA center.

Bulk pickup isn't for paint

Delray's bulk pickup takes refrigerators, washers, couches, bedding and fences up to 6 feet. Construction materials aren't collected, and bulk set out at the wrong time is charged $11.50 per cubic yard on your water bill. Paint belongs at the SWA centers, not the curb.

Western Delray handles bigger fuel loads too

If you're clearing a garage, the western center is one of only two SWA sites that take up to 30 gallons of gasoline (10 at the others). On weekdays it's also one of two that will give your empty gas can back.

Who to call

For the drop-offs, call the SWA at 561-697-2700. For city garbage questions or missed pickups, call the city at 561-243-7530 or WM at 561-202-2463.

Free pickup programs and other options

Florida has no PaintCare program, so Delray paint stores won't take leftovers back for free. Neither the city nor the SWA collects hazardous waste at the curb. If both Delray centers are inconvenient, the SWA's staffed Jog Road center is covered in the West Palm Beach guide. Homeowners who need exterior paint can ask the SWA about its one-time recycled latex giveaway for single-family homes up to 3,000 square feet.

Sort the cans before you leave: anything with liquid goes to SW 4th Avenue or State Road 7, and bone-dry empties stay home, because SWA centers turn away empty containers. Seal lids, set a leaky can in a bucket with a lid, and wedge the load upright so nothing tips. Pick a weekday if you want the staffed State Road 7 center.

Delray Beach questions5
Where can I drop off paint in Delray Beach?

At either SWA Home Chemical & Recycling Center in the city: 13400 S. State Road 7 or 1901 SW 4th Ave. Both are open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Which Delray center has staff to help?

The western center on State Road 7, Monday to Friday. The eastern center on SW 4th Avenue is self-service, and both are self-service on Saturday.

Is it free?

Yes, for Palm Beach County residents. Business waste goes through the SWA's paid VSQG program.

Can I put paint in my Delray garbage cart?

Not liquid paint. City code bans trash with undrained liquids in garbage containers, and WM lists paint as household hazardous waste it won't take.

Is there a limit on paint?

The SWA doesn't list a paint limit. PaintCare's listing calls the eastern site unattended and says quantities may be limited there. For a large load, call 561-697-2700, option 3.

Sources and how we checked10

Checked October 16, 2026: SWA facility pages for the western Delray Beach (staffed weekdays, self-service Saturday) and eastern Delray Beach (self-service) centers, the SWA hazardous waste page (accepted items, gasoline and oil caps, no curbside pickup, VSQG steps), the City of Delray Beach Sanitation Division page (two SWA centers named for oil-based paint, bulk rules, Sec. 51.40 liquids rule, contacts), WM's Delray Beach residential page, the SWA recycled paint donation form, Florida DEP and PaintCare's listings. Unresolved: the SWA doesn't publish a paint gallon limit. Only PaintCare's listings say small amounts of latex can be dried with sand, cat litter or sawdust and thrown out; the SWA's own pages and the city's page don't say this. PaintCare calls both Delray sites unattended, while the SWA says the western site is staffed on weekdays. The city page's complaint email is a wm.com address. This guide covers the two Delray Beach centers; the West Palm Beach guide covers Jog Road and the other northern centers.
