THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take up to 5 gallons of paint to the Gifford Customer Convenience Center, 4901 41st St., 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; it is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. It is free for Indian River County residents. Don't take paint to the county landfill: a county notice still posted says that since Hurricane Milton it can't take household hazardous waste.

In Vero Beach, Florida, paint goes to one of Indian River County's five Customer Convenience Centers. They take latex and oil-based paint free, up to 5 gallons, from county residents. The City of Vero Beach points residents to these county sites. A county notice still posted says the main landfill on 74th Ave. SW can't take household hazardous waste because of Hurricane Milton damage.

Every center is closed Wednesday

Gifford, Winter Beach and Roseland close Tuesday and Wednesday. Oslo and Fellsmere close Wednesday and Thursday. So on a Tuesday use Oslo or Fellsmere; on a Thursday use Gifford, Winter Beach or Roseland. Nothing is open on Wednesday.

The landfill is not the place for paint

A county notice, undated but still posted, says damage from Hurricane Milton means the main landfill, 1325 74th Ave. SW, can't take household hazardous waste or electronics. Bring them to one of the five convenience centers instead.

More than paint is welcome

The centers also take spray paint, thinners and strippers, varnish, wood stain, motor oil up to 5 gallons, propane tanks up to 20 pounds and pool chemicals. The county rate sheet lists household hazardous waste at $0.00.

PaintCare lists some centers as no-latex

The county says all five centers take water- and oil-based paint. PaintCare's listings for Oslo, Winter Beach and Roseland say no latex. If you have latex, Gifford is the safest bet, or call 772-226-3212 first.

No business paint at the centers

The centers are for residents only; the county tells businesses to use the main landfill. But the landfill isn't taking hazardous waste right now, so a contractor will likely need a private hazardous waste company. Call the Solid Waste Disposal District at 772-226-3212 to ask.

Free pickup programs and other options

Florida has no PaintCare program, so no store take-back. Unlike Orlando, where Orange County runs one large transfer station, Indian River County spreads free drop-off over five small centers: Gifford, Oslo and Winter Beach near Vero Beach, Roseland near Sebastian, and Fellsmere on County Road 512. They serve the City of Vero Beach, Sebastian, Fellsmere, Orchid and unincorporated county homes. Usable paint can go to a friend or community group.

Keep paint in closed, labeled cans and stand them in a box. Bring no more than 5 gallons per trip. PaintCare's listing says the centers won't take empty, dry or leaking cans, so leave those home. Check the day first: each center is closed two days a week.

Vero Beach questions5
Can City of Vero Beach residents use the county centers?

Yes. The city's household hazardous waste page sends Vero Beach residents to the county landfill and convenience centers. The centers are for Indian River County residents only.

Is there a fee?

No. The latest rate sheet the county posts (fiscal year 2025-2026) lists household hazardous waste at $0.00.

Can I take paint to the landfill on 74th Ave. SW?

No. The county says the landfill can't take household hazardous waste because of Hurricane Milton damage. Use a convenience center.

Which center is open on a Tuesday?

Oslo (950 1st Pl.) and Fellsmere (12510 County Road 512). Gifford, Winter Beach and Roseland are closed Tuesday.

How much paint can I bring?

Up to 5 gallons, according to the county's list of accepted items.

Sources and how we checked9

Checked October 13, 2026: Indian River County's landfill and convenience center page (five centers, hours, closure days, residential use only, water- and oil-based paint), the county's accepted-items sheet (paints up to 5 gallons; residents only; businesses to the landfill), the undated HHW and E-Waste Landfill Update (no HHW at the landfill after Hurricane Milton; still posted on the solid waste news list), the 2025-2026 rate sheet (HHW $0.00), the SWDD FAQ (city residents and the Oct. 1, 2025 universal collection change), the City of Vero Beach HHW page, Florida DEP and PaintCare's locator data. Unresolved: PaintCare's listings say Oslo, Winter Beach and Roseland don't take latex while the county says all centers take water-based paint; whether the landfill has reopened to HHW; where businesses should take paint now; whether the 5-gallon limit is per visit or per day; what proof of residency is checked. The 2025-2026 rate sheet may since have been updated. The county gives no dried-latex rule and we found no 2026 collection events. Peer review (Oct. 13): no 2026-2027 rate sheet was posted; the county's landfill page still links the 2025-2026 sheet and says landfill rates rise 3% a year. PaintCare's listings flag Oslo, Winter Beach, Roseland and the landfill as no-latex, but not Gifford or Fellsmere.
