THE LOCAL ANSWERTake paint to the Northwest County Community Collection Center, 8001 W Linebaugh Avenue, Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a photo ID showing your Hillsborough County address. The limit is 10 one-gallon and 5 five-gallon cans per household per month. Spray paint and thinners must wait for a hazardous waste Saturday: Sheldon Road (1st), South County (2nd) or Hillsborough Heights (3rd), 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tampa residents use Hillsborough County's sites for paint. The Northwest County center on Linebaugh Avenue takes paint six days a week, and three sites hold hazardous waste Saturdays each month. The City of Tampa no longer runs its own chemical collection day.
City residents use county sites for free
The City of Tampa works with Hillsborough County so city residents can use county paint and hazardous waste sites at no extra charge. A valid driver's license proves city residency.
McKay Bay does not take paint
Tampa's McKay Bay Scale House at 114 South 34th Street lists paint products as not accepted. Take paint to a county site instead.
Paint any day, chemicals on Saturdays
The five Community Collection Centers take paint, stain and varnish Monday to Saturday. They do not take spray cans, thinners or other chemicals. Those go to the Saturday hazardous waste days: Sheldon Road (1st), South County (2nd), Hillsborough Heights (3rd).
The limit counts cans, not paint
Hillsborough counts containers, not how much is left in them: 10 one-gallon and 5 five-gallon cans per household per month. Combining small amounts of the same latex into one can saves room, but don't mix different products.
Weather can close Saturdays early
The county says the Sheldon Road site may close early in bad weather. In summer storm season, check before you load the car.
