THE LOCAL ANSWERTake liquid paint to Lee County's Household Chemical Waste facility, 6441 Topaz Court, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or the first Saturday of the month, 8 a.m. to noon. It is free for Lee County residents and takes oil-based and latex paint. Empty cans and dried paint go in your regular garbage. The Reuse Center at the same site gives away usable paint.
The City of Fort Myers does not pick up paint. It sends residents to Lee County's free Household Chemical Waste facility on Topaz Court, off Metro Parkway, which also runs a free Reuse Center. Florida has no paint store take-back program, so the county site and its traveling collection days are where leftover paint goes.
Shake the can before you load it
Lee County says empty paint cans and dried paint are regular household garbage. PaintCare's listing for the county site says it will not take empty, dry or leaking cans, and suggests a simple test: if you hear or feel liquid when you shake the can, bring it in.
Weekday hours changed in September
Topaz Court now runs 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays; the county says the new hours took effect Sept. 2. Saturday is only the first Saturday of the month, 8 a.m. to noon, and moves on holiday weekends. Because of Labor Day, the county closed on Saturday, Sept. 5 and offered Saturday service on Sept. 12 instead.
Pick up free paint at the Reuse Center
The Reuse Center at Topaz Court is self-serve and may have latex paint, cleaners and pesticides. Take up to 10 items per visit, as often as you like. Stock changes daily.
Thunderstorms pause the drop-off
The facility stops service during thunderstorms and reopens when driving rain and lightning pass. A morning trip is the safer bet.
Painters and landlords book a monthly business day
Businesses use a paid collection day at Topaz Court, usually the fourth Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Remaining 2026 dates are October 28, November 18 and December 16. Book with MXI Environmental Services at 276-477-0947 or CESQG@MXIINC.com.
