THE LOCAL ANSWERTake leftover paint to the Sarasota County Chemical Collection Center, 8750 Bee Ridge Road, Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is free for county residents, including City of Sarasota residents; you may be asked for proof of address. Dried water-based paint can go in the garbage. The Re-Uz-It Shop in the same building stocks usable paint.
The City of Sarasota has no curbside pickup for liquid paint. Sarasota County takes it free at its Chemical Collection Center on Bee Ridge Road, the landfill convenience center in Nokomis and the rebuilt south center in Venice. Florida has no paint store take-back program, so these county sites are where leftover paint goes.
Dry latex, but bring oil-based paint in
The county's residents' guide says dried water-based paint can go in the garbage. The city's Cart Smart tool says empty or fully dried cans go in your garbage cart. Liquid latex and all oil-based paint go to a county drop-off.
Check the Re-Uz-It Shop before you buy
Usable paint, cleaners and pool chemicals dropped off by residents end up on the Re-Uz-It Shop shelves at Bee Ridge Road. It is open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You must be 18 and show photo ID. The county page does not say whether items cost anything.
Bring proof you live in the county
Staff may ask for a driver's license, tax bill or utility bill. PaintCare's listing says large amounts will be questioned, so call 941-861-5000 before bringing a big load.
Watch the holiday closures
All county sites close on New Year's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The Bee Ridge and Venice centers also close on other government holidays. When one of those five holidays falls on a weekday, the Nokomis convenience center stays open until 5 p.m. the Saturday after.
Businesses go through Project Green Sweep
Waste from a business, nonprofit or community group is not free. Those groups apply to the county's Project Green Sweep and pay set prices. The free drop-off is only for paint from your home.
