THE LOCAL ANSWERTake leftover paint to the Brevard County hazardous waste center at the Sarno Landfill, 3379 Sarno Rd. in Melbourne, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except Sunday. Brevard households pay nothing and can bring 25 gallons a year, each container 5 gallons or smaller. Don't set paint out for WM; Melbourne's hauler lists it as a non-acceptable cart item.
In Melbourne, Florida, leftover paint goes to Brevard County's household hazardous waste center at the Sarno Landfill on Sarno Road. It's one of three county centers and is free for Brevard residents. Unlike the Titusville center, Sarno has a Drop and Swap shelf where you can pick up usable paint for free.
The hazardous waste center keeps shorter hours than the landfill
The Sarno facility, with its landfill and transfer station, opens 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The hazardous waste center inside takes paint only from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday. The landfill and transfer station at the same site turn away liquids and hazardous waste.
Shop the Drop and Swap before you buy
Sarno and the Cocoa center are the only two Brevard sites with a Drop and Swap. Residents bring in usable paint, cleaners and car fluids, and residents can browse and take them for free. The county's recycled latex paint giveaway is suspended indefinitely, so this shelf is the free-paint option now.
Melbourne's carts and curbside bulk won't take paint
WM collects Melbourne's garbage, recycling and bulk items. Its Melbourne page lists paint, oil and household cleaners as items you can't put in the cart. The city's bulk and specialty pickups cover furniture, appliances, electronics and tires, not paint. Batteries pulled from electronics go to Sarno too.
Hardened cans go in the green-lid cart
A can that's empty or dried hard doesn't count as hazardous waste to Brevard. Pull the lid off and put it in your green-lidded WM garbage cart. The Sarno landfill's accepted list includes empty paint cans, but the hazardous waste center asks you not to bring them.
