THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take leftover paint to the Brevard County hazardous waste center at the Mockingbird Way Mulching Facility, 3600 South St., Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's free for Brevard County residents, up to 25 gallons of liquids a year, with no container over 5 gallons. Don't take paint to the Titusville Transfer Station down the road; it refuses hazardous and liquid waste.

In Titusville, Florida, paint goes to Brevard County's household hazardous waste center at the Mockingbird Way Mulching Facility on South Street. It is the county's northern center of three, open six days a week and free for Brevard residents. The county takes latex and oil-based paint, up to 25 gallons of liquids per household a year.

Mockingbird, not the transfer station

Both are on South Street (SR-405). The Titusville Transfer Station at 4366 South St. takes household and commercial garbage only and lists hazardous waste and liquid waste as prohibited. Paint goes to the Mockingbird facility at 3600 South St., near Park Avenue.

Hazardous waste has shorter hours

The mulching facility opens 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but the hazardous waste center inside it takes waste only from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Call 321-264-5009 if you're cutting it close.

25 gallons a year

Brevard allows 25 gallons (about 220 pounds) of household hazardous waste per household per year, and nothing in a container bigger than 5 gallons. Bring a driver's license, tax bill or utility bill to show you live in the county.

Empty or hardened cans go in the trash

Brevard County says paint cans that are empty, hardened or dried up can go in your regular trash with the lid removed, and asks you not to bring empty cans to the center. Titusville's own cart rules ban wet paint and hazardous waste from your cart.

The paint giveaway has ended

Brevard's 32-year latex recycled paint giveaway is suspended indefinitely because the processor stopped. For free usable paint, check the Drop and Swap shelves at the Cocoa and Sarno (Melbourne) centers; Mockingbird doesn't have one.

Free pickup programs and other options

Florida has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don't take old paint back for free. Brevard's three centers are in Titusville, Cocoa (2250 Adamson Rd.) and Melbourne (3379 Sarno Rd.), all with the same hours. Orange County's Orlando sites are for Orange County households. Very small businesses can't use the household centers; they can use Brevard's EnviroBusiness days, held every 90 days, by booking and paying the county's contractor. The county's page says to book with Clean Harbors at 863-533-6111 and email your inventory at least a week ahead. The next one the county lists is October 29, 2026; call 321-633-1888.

Keep paint in its original labeled container and don't mix products. Put leaky cans in clear plastic bags, pack them in a sturdy box with newspaper, and carry the box in the trunk, away from passengers. Spray paint cans that aren't empty go to the center too.

Sources and how we checked9

Checked October 16, 2026 (county pages read in the browser because they block scripts): Brevard County's household hazardous waste page (three centers, Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., 25-gallon yearly limit, 5-gallon container cap, proof of residency, Drop and Swap at Cocoa and Sarno only, recycled paint giveaway suspended, empty or dried cans in trash with lid off, 2026 EnviroBusiness days), the Mockingbird Way Mulching Facility page (hazardous waste center hours, household only), the Titusville Transfer Station page (hazardous and liquid waste prohibited), the City of Titusville solid waste page, garbage collection procedures (no wet paint in carts) and holiday schedule, Florida DEP, and PaintCare's listings. Unresolved: PaintCare lists 321-409-9430 for Mockingbird, while the county lists 321-264-5009. The county doesn't say whether the centers close on holidays. Peer review (October 16, 2026): the transfer station takes household and commercial garbage; the EnviroBusiness section names Clean Harbors for appointments but also mentions US Ecology in one line. A search snippet mentioned an older Mockingbird notice about a temporary material halt ending in August 2026; the current facility page no longer shows it.
