THE LOCAL ANSWERBring your paint and your ID to Indigenous Park, 1801 White Street, on the first Saturday of the month between 8 a.m. and noon; it’s for City of Key West residents only. It’s free, but businesses are turned away; Key West businesses go to the county’s Cudjoe Key Transfer Station instead. Storms can move the date during hurricane season, so check the city’s HHW page first. Questions: 305-809-3776.
In Key West, Florida, the city runs its own paint drop-off, separate from Monroe County’s. City residents bring paint free to Sonny McCoy Indigenous Park, 1801 White Street, on the first Saturday of each month, 8 a.m. to noon. The city transfer station on Rockland Key won’t take it. Florida has no PaintCare program.
City residents only, with ID
The First Saturday drop-off is run by the city with Waste Management for City of Key West residents only, and the city’s hazardous waste info sheet says the events are free to residents with identification. Businesses that try to drop off hazardous waste are turned away. Liquids must be in sealed, leak-proof containers, and the containers stay there. The city gives two addresses for the park: 1801 White Street on most of its pages, but 1800 White Street on its March 2026 curbside info sheet. Call 305-809-3776 if you can’t find it.
Don’t take paint to Rockland Key
The city transfer station at 161 Toppino Industrial Drive (mile marker 9, Rockland Key) does not accept household chemicals or electronics, and loads with them will be denied. The city’s March 2026 curbside info sheet lists household hazardous waste among items the station takes for a tipping fee, but the station’s own page and the HHW page say no. Plan on the station turning paint away, since its own page says such loads will be denied, and call 305-809-3776 if you need to check. The old Stock Island Landfill is closed.
Hurricane season can move the date
The city says the First Saturday date may change because of weather and asks residents to check its HHW page for changes from June 1 to November 30. When checked on October 17, 2026, the HHW page listed collections on November 7 and December 5, 2026.
Businesses drive to Cudjoe Key
The city tells Key West businesses with hazardous material to use the Monroe County Cudjoe Key Transfer Station at mile marker 21.5, Blimp Road. It takes hazardous waste on the first and third Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The county charges businesses a $12 minimum, then $0.60 a pound over 20 pounds. The city’s PDF also says businesses can call Waste Management at 305-296-8297 for options.
Not with bulk pickup or the carts
Waste Management’s two free bulk pickups a year (2 cubic yards or less, booked at 305-296-8297) exclude liquids and poisons. The city won’t service carts holding prohibited wastes, and its recycling page lists household chemicals as not recyclable. The city pages reviewed don’t say whether dried latex can go in the green cart; ask 305-809-3776.
