THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take paint to the free Alachua County Hazardous Waste Collection Center at 5125 NE 63rd Avenue, open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. It takes latex, oil-based and spray paint. Free leftover paint is there for the taking too.

Gainesville paint goes to Alachua County's Hazardous Waste Collection Center on NE 63rd Avenue, next to the Leveda Brown transfer station north of the airport. It's free for residents, open six days, and takes nearly every kind of paint. You can also pick up free leftover paint there.

Saturday hours are short

The main center is open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but Saturday only 8 a.m. to noon. Closed Sundays and holidays.

Rural centers take paint, but not every day

The city says all five county rural collection centers take paint. They are closed Wednesday and Thursday, take limited amounts, and serve Alachua County residents only. North Central on State Road 121 is the closest for northwest Gainesville.

Free paint for your next project

The county lets the public take leftover paint from the collection center's reuse area. Gainesville's July 2024 Zero Waste News called it free recycled paint. What's there changes day to day.

Businesses pay, even for one can

County code says businesses must pay no matter the amount. Very small businesses can use the main center. The county's FY25 schedule (from October 2024) lists latex at $1.95 a gallon and oil-based at $5.50 to $7.80 a gallon. Prices may have changed, so call 352-334-0440 first.

Free pickup programs and other options

Florida has no PaintCare program, so stores do not take paint back. The city suggests giving usable paint to family, neighbors, churches, schools or charities. Empty, dry cans can go in your regular trash.

Keep paint in closed, labeled cans and pack them upright in a box. Don't bring trash, recyclables or treated wood to the collection center; those go to the transfer station. Businesses should call ahead for a price.

Gainesville questions5
Can students and renters in Gainesville use the center?

County sources say it serves Alachua County residents and neighboring-county residents. No ID rule is published, so bring something showing your address.

What kinds of paint are taken?

Latex, oil-based, enamel, acrylic, deck paint, primers, stains, varnishes, waterproofing paint, rust preventatives and spray paint.

Can I throw away an empty paint can?

Yes. The city says dry, empty cans can go in your regular trash.

Is there a Swap Shop in Gainesville?

Not by that name. The county collection center has a reuse area where anyone can take leftover paint for free.

Are there paint drop-off events in Alachua County?

The county's 2026 spring clean-up and reuse events in Newberry, Micanopy and at Santa Fe College were in April and are past. The main center is open year-round.

Sources and how we checked9

October 7, 2026 check: read the county hazardous waste page, its brochure (hours, rural centers, residency, business rules), the FY25 fee schedule (the newest the county links), the county project page (reuse and April 2026 events, all past) and the city's household hazardous waste page. The city says rural centers take paint; the county only says limited types and amounts. No household gallon limit, ID rule or newer fee schedule was found; the county still links only the FY25 schedule even though FY27 began October 1, 2026, so business prices may be out of date. The county's paint reuse news releases now return errors.
