THE LOCAL ANSWERDry out latex paint and put it in your home garbage; Campbell County doesn’t take liquid latex. Take oil-based paint and spray paint to the Campbell County Landfill, 4 N Landfill Rd., which the county says is 11 miles north of Gillette on North Highway 59, weekdays 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m.; it’s free for county residents. Saturday hours differ between the county’s pages, so call 307-682-1153 before a Saturday trip.
Gillette, Wyoming (Campbell County) splits paint by type. Oil-based paint and spray paint go free to the Campbell County Landfill, which the county says is 11 miles north of Gillette on North Highway 59. Latex paint isn’t taken there as a liquid: you dry it out and throw it away with your household trash. Wyoming has no PaintCare program.
Dry latex with kitty litter or ashes
The county says to open latex cans and let the paint dry completely. Hardener from a hardware store speeds it up, and so does mixing in kitty litter or ashes. Then put it in your garbage dumpster at home or take it to the landfill with your household trash.
Plan a trip out of town for oil-based paint
The hazardous waste drop-off is at the North Landfill, which the county puts about 11 miles north of Gillette. From Skyline Drive and 2nd Street, the county says to go north about 7 miles to Highway 59, turn right and go another 4 miles to North Landfill Road on the left. Pull onto the inbound scale closest to the scale house, and the attendant will direct you.
Two different Saturday hours
The county’s hazardous waste page says Saturday 11 a.m.–4:30 p.m. The landfill’s main page says Saturday 7:30 a.m.–1 p.m. If you can only go on Saturday, call 307-682-1153 first, or go on a weekday.
The Westover Road listing looks out of date
PaintCare’s non-program listing still shows a South Facility (CARE) at 909 Westover Rd. taking hazardous waste weekdays 10 a.m.–6 p.m. A 2017 county FAQ said hazardous waste could go to Westover Road for a while, but that by summer 2018 everything except CARE recyclables must go to the North Landfill. The county’s current hazardous waste page names only the landfill at 4 N Landfill Rd. The county hasn’t said outright that Westover stopped, so call 307-682-1153 before you try it.
Tarp it or pay $25
The landfill charges $25 for a residential load (and $50 for a commercial one) that arrives untied or untarped. Strap down the box of cans, especially for the highway drive north.
