Everything you need to get rid of leftover paint responsibly in Rutland.

14 Gleason Road, Rutland, VT 05701
RCSWD's hazardous waste pages, its 2024 price list and PaintCare's listing all say you need an RCSWD permit. A district alert updated August 31, 2026 says permits are no longer required to use the Gleason Road transfer station in 2026. Ask when you book. Empty paint cans are trash: let them dry, leave the lids off and put them in your regular trash.
261 North Main Street, Rutland, VT 05701
No spray cans, thinner, or unlabeled, leaking or empty containers. The Solid Waste Alliance Communities also name this store for Rutland Town and other SWAC residents.
4 paint stores and 1 hazardous waste site, closest first. Paint stores take house paint, stain and varnish, usually up to a set amount per visit. Hazardous waste sites also take chemicals like thinner, but some only serve local residents. Call before you go.

From PaintCare’s drop-off map ↗, updated October 6, 2026. Hours and limits are PaintCare’s. Distances are straight-line, not driving.
Your transfer station on Northwood Park Road won't take paint. Take house paint to a PaintCare store; a quart or less of latex can be dried hard and trashed, per SWAC. For solvents, book Gleason Road and expect non-district fees, or wait for SWAC's April 24, 2027 day at your transfer station.
Both towns are RCSWD members, so paint and most chemicals are free at Gleason Road by appointment. Their Rover days for 2026 have passed.
Call RCSWD before booking; very small businesses use the depot by special arrangement and bring safety data sheets. Paint itself is free under PaintCare; other waste is priced per gallon.
PaintCare stores won't take spray cans. The depot takes aerosols with product left in them; small loads of 10 items or fewer can go to the recycling center without an appointment.
Book a slot at the RCSWD depot, 14 Gleason Road, Monday–Saturday, at least 24 hours ahead. Paint is free there for everyone under RCSWD's 2024 price list, and district residents can bring thinner and other chemicals free too. For 5 gallons or less of labeled house paint, Aubuchon Ace on North Main Street or another PaintCare store is simpler.
Rutland City belongs to the Rutland County Solid Waste District (RCSWD). Its hazardous waste depot on Gleason Road takes paint six days a week by appointment. Rutland Town is different: it belongs to the Solid Waste Alliance Communities (SWAC), whose next hazardous waste day is in 2027. Four PaintCare stores in the Rutland area take house paint year-round.
Rutland City is an RCSWD member; Rutland Town is not. The town's transfer station on Northwood Park Road lists paint among things it can't take, and its next hazardous waste day is in 2027. SWAC says town residents can book Gleason Road too, but non-district fees apply to chemicals other than paint. SWAC also says a quart or less of latex can be dried hard with kitty litter and put in the trash with the lid off, but never oil-based paint.
RCSWD's hazardous waste pages, its 2024 price list and PaintCare's listing still say you need a permit. A district alert updated August 31, 2026 says permits are no longer required to use the Gleason Road transfer station this year. Ask when you book so you aren't turned away.
RCSWD's Rover visited town transfer stations from April to September; the last stops were Killington/Pittsfield and Proctor on September 26. Until the 2027 schedule comes out, Gleason Road is the district's only hazardous waste option.
The 2026 Rover schedule says 10 hazardous items or fewer can go to the recycling center without an appointment, and the aerosol page mentions walk-ins Tuesday–Thursday. For a full basement, book.
Sherwin-Williams on Woodstock Avenue, Aubuchon Ace on North Main Street, Yankee Paint on US Route 4 East and LaValley Building Supply on Windcrest Road each take 5 gallons per visit.
Nearby PaintCare stores include Brandon Lumber, Aubuchon in Fair Haven and Noble Ace in Poultney. SWAC holds free hazardous waste days for its 10 towns: April 24, 2027 at the Rutland Town Transfer Station and October 2, 2027 in Fair Haven. With 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare about a free pickup.

Book online at appt.rcswd.com or call 802-775-7209 at least a day ahead. Keep paint in labeled cans with tight lids, and pack other chemicals separately. If you live outside the district and bring more than paint, bring $5 for the visit fee. Dry out empty paint cans, leave the lids off and put them in the trash.
Full preparation checklist →Yes. RCSWD's 2024 price list shows latex and oil paint at no cost for district and non-district customers alike. RCSWD charges non-district visitors $5 per visit, but says that fee doesn't apply to visits only for free take-back items like paint.
Use a PaintCare store for house paint. For thinner and other chemicals, book Gleason Road as a non-district customer, or wait for SWAC's April 24, 2027 day at the Rutland Town Transfer Station.
Very small businesses in the district can, by calling 802-775-7209 ext. 203 or emailing programs@rcswd.com first. RCSWD lists painters and property managers as typical examples.
Vermont bans paint from landfills, and Vermont DEC and RCSWD both say to check with your district before trashing hardened latex. RCSWD says empty, dried cans can go in the trash with the lids off. SWAC, which serves Rutland Town, allows a quart or less of hardened latex in the trash. Recycle bigger amounts instead.
No. The last 2026 Rover stops were on September 26. Watch rcswd.com for the 2027 schedule.
On October 13, 2026 we read RCSWD's hazardous waste, Rover, permit alert, hours, member town, paint and business pages, its 2024 price list, accepted-items list and updated 2026 Rover schedule, plus Rutland Town's transfer station page, SWAC's home page and FAQs, Vermont DEC and PaintCare's locator data. RCSWD gives two different depot hours (8 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and conflicting permit rules. The price list is from 2024; a newer price list link sat behind a bot check we couldn't pass. The 5-gallon depot limit comes only from PaintCare. We didn't check store capacity.
