Free at the Eco Depot by appointment, or at a PaintCare store up to 5 gallons per visit. The store is closer for a few cans.
Paint without a readable label is charged as hazardous waste, and PaintCare stores won't take it. Book the Eco Depot and expect the member fee by volume.
Very small businesses use the Eco Depot's business form, Tuesdays or Thursdays, and pay cost plus 20% for hazardous waste. Bringing oil-based paint to a PaintCare store depends on business size.
You can still use the Eco Depot. Paint is free; hazardous waste costs the non-member rate.
Book a household slot at the Eco Depot in Berlin: Monday, Wednesday, Friday or third Saturday. Labeled house paint, stain and finish are free; thinner, spray paint and unlabeled paint cost a fee. For a few cans, Aubuchon Ace, 40 Main Street, takes up to 5 gallons.
Montpelier belongs to the Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District (CVSWMD), which opened a year-round Eco Depot at 300 Granger Road, Berlin, in June 2026. House paint is free there by appointment. Two downtown PaintCare stores take small loads.
Until June 2026, central Vermont had hazardous waste days at a site in Barre. Now everything goes to the red warehouse at 300 Granger Road, Berlin, by appointment all year. Old flyers about Barre are out of date.
Free paint must be in its original labeled can. Unreadable labels, and art, craft, machine, boat or car paint, are charged as hazardous waste ($15 for 1–10 gallons for Montpelier residents). Keep labels dry.
The Eco Depot serves all Vermonters, but non-member towns pay about 30% more for hazardous waste. Montpelier is a member, so you pay less. Paint is free for everyone.

Household hazardous waste: 20 gallons. Call to book for more, or for any container over 5 gallons. The paint page allows bigger paint loads, but PaintCare says 20, so call first if you have more.
No. Cash or check only.
No. PaintCare stores don't take spray cans. Bring them to the Eco Depot, where they're charged as hazardous waste.
We checked CVSWMD's Eco Depot, paint, appointment and hazardous waste pages, its August 4, 2026 brochure, WCAX's June 2026 opening story, Vermont DEC, and PaintCare. Not settled: exact drop-off times aren't posted, and paint limits conflict (paint page: unlimited, appointment over 25 gallons; household page and PaintCare: 20). We couldn't confirm the old Barre recycling center's status. Montpelier's pages say nothing on paint.
Checked October 6, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
