If it hasn't happened yet, the Burke day set for Saturday, October 17, 2026 is the last 2026 chance. Otherwise, hold chemicals for the 2027 dates. Take any house paint to a PaintCare store now.
You're in NEKWMD. Its Lyndonville center works by appointment from May to early October; this season has ended. PaintCare stores take paint all year.
Pre-register for a hazardous waste day and pay at the event. The schedule says businesses come 8:30–9 a.m.; the September notice said 8–8:30, so confirm the time when you register. Paint alone can go to a PaintCare store.
PaintCare stores don't take aerosols. Cans with anything left go to a hazardous waste day; fully empty ones can go in the trash.
For house paint, stain or varnish, go to Aubuchon Ace at 222 Hastings Hill Road or Sherwin-Williams at 422 Portland Street, 5 gallons a visit. Thinner and other chemicals go to a St. Johnsbury–Burke hazardous waste day. The last 2026 day was set for Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Burke Town Garage, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.; after that, hold chemicals for the 2027 dates.
St. Johnsbury, in Caledonia County, isn't a member of the Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District, so its Lyndonville hazardous waste center isn't open to you. The town runs its own program with Burke instead: in 2026, four hazardous waste days. Between those, two PaintCare stores in St. Johnsbury, Aubuchon Ace and Sherwin-Williams, take house paint.
NEKWMD's 49 member towns don't include St. Johnsbury or Burke. The district says: "If your town isn't in the district, you are not able to use our center." Its hazardous waste season runs from May to the beginning of October. Neighbors like Danville, Barnet, Waterford, Concord and Lyndon are members.
In 2026 the town listed St. Johnsbury days on May 16 and September 26 at the municipal lot on North Main Street, and Burke days on July 18 and October 17 at the Burke Town Garage. Residents come 9 a.m.–1 p.m. The schedule gives small businesses 8:30–9 a.m., but the September notice told them 8–8:30 a.m., so ask when you register.
The September 2026 notice let residents bring 10 gallons of hazardous waste free, plus pesticides, latex and oil-based house paint and single-use batteries. Extra units cost $5. Non-residents paid a $30 fee.
The September 26 day had a paint drop and swap: leave good cans you don't need, or take some for your own project.
The town's solid waste program says fully dried latex can go in the trash. Cans with any liquid go to a hazardous waste day or a PaintCare store.
Sherwin-Williams, 422 Portland Street, takes 5 gallons per visit. Lyndonville Ace Hardware on Broad Street in Lyndonville is another PaintCare store. The town transfer station is at 584 High Street (802-535-3008), but its pages don't list paint. With 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare about a free pickup.

Keep paint in original labeled cans with tight lids. For a hazardous waste day, sort paint, solvents and batteries into separate boxes. Businesses must pre-register.
Full preparation checklist →No. St. Johnsbury isn't on the district's member list, and the district says non-member towns can't use its center.

On October 16, 2026 we read the town's 2026 hazardous waste schedule and September 26 notice, the St. Johnsbury solid waste program's event, A-Z, hazardous waste and location pages, Burke's hazardous waste page, NEKWMD's member-town and hazardous waste pages, Vermont DEC and PaintCare's locator data. St. Johnsbury is not an NEKWMD member, despite sometimes being grouped with it. Burke's page addresses only Burke residents; the joint listing says both towns. The schedule gives businesses 8:30–9 a.m.; the September notice said 8–8:30 a.m. The September notice's hours text was garbled. Limits and fees for October 17 weren't posted separately. We didn't find what proof of residency is needed.
