THE LOCAL ANSWERCall 1-800-449-7587 to book an At-Your-Door pickup; Waste Management mails you a kit, then a truck collects the paint from your doorstep on the date you agree. It takes oil-based and latex paint, spray paint and solvents, and you can book as many times as you need. For latex only, the city’s Waste Wizard says the can can go in your gray trash cart once the lid is off and the paint is dry.
Victoria, Texas picks up household paint at your door. The city pays Waste Management to run At-Your-Door Special Waste Collection, which takes oil-based and latex paint all year by appointment at 1-800-449-7587. TCEQ lists the program under Victoria County, serving the City of Victoria. Texas has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don’t take paint back.
How a doorstep pickup works
When you call 1-800-449-7587, the operator asks for your address and the type and amount of what you have. A household hazardous waste kit is mailed to you to pack your items. A truck then picks them up from your doorstep on the agreed date. The city says the service runs all year, as often as you need it. PaintCare’s non-program listing adds that collections are Monday through Friday.
Dry latex: lid off, then the gray cart
The Waste Wizard’s first choice for full or partly full latex is At-Your-Door pickup. Its other option is the gray trash cart, but only “if the lid is removed and the paint is dry.” Empty paint cans go in the gray cart. Oil-based paint, spray paint and solvents have no cart option; they go to At-Your-Door. The garbage page says no hazardous waste in gray carts, and the cart lid must close completely.
Bulky pickups won’t take paint
Residents get two free bulky pickups a year of up to 6 cubic yards each, booked online or at 361-485-3220. Overages cost $1.50 a minute, and a third pickup costs $20 plus $1.50 a minute, billed on the water bill. Minor construction debris must be non-toxic and asbestos-free, up to 2 cubic yards. The city says hazardous waste may not be collected as a bulky item.
County courtesy stations refuse paint
Victoria County’s courtesy stations take household trash and scrap metal but not hazardous materials “(including paint).” They are at 706 Black Bayou Rd. in Bloomington, 751 E. Grouse Rd. in Victoria and 415 Aviation Dr. The county takes used oil at its 301 Quail Creek Dr. recycling site and at 415 Aviation Dr.
