THE LOCAL ANSWERSave liquid paint for the next SETRPC household hazardous waste event, and call 409-899-8444 ext. 7520 to ask for the date. Each household can bring up to ten 1-gallon cans and two 5-gallon cans of paint; businesses can’t use it. The 2026 event was on May 30, and no later date was posted in the sources reviewed. The city says paint and varnish shouldn’t go out with your regular garbage.
Beaumont, Texas has no year-round drop-off for paint. The city sends residents to the South East Texas Regional Planning Commission (SETRPC), which holds free household hazardous waste and scrap tire events for southeast Texas households. The 2026 event was on Saturday, May 30, at Buna High School in Buna. SETRPC’s event sheets list Beaumont under Jefferson County. Texas has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don’t take paint back.
Sources disagree on dried paint in the trash
The city’s Hazardous Waste tab says paint and varnish should not be thrown out with regular garbage. SETRPC’s 2026 news release quotes its executive director, Shanna Burke: “It’s not acceptable to throw batteries, paint, or other hazardous waste in a trash can.” But SETRPC’s 2021 paint flyer says dry paint can go in regular trash and that cat litter will harden latex (not oil-based). If you want to dry latex, call Solid Waste at 409-842-1483 first.
The paint cap per household
SETRPC limits paint to ten 1-gallon cans and two 5-gallon cans per household. In 2026 it also turned away electronics, appliances, garbage, scrap metal, explosives, ammunition, medical waste and medications. Tires: the first eight are free, then $1 cash each up to 30, with no tires over 22 inches or on rims.
Events move around the region
The 2026 event was in Buna, and the 2025 one was on May 17 at Bridge City Intermediate School. SETRPC’s results sheet for that day counts 40 Beaumont households and 7,500 pounds of latex and oil-based paint. Its sheet for the Aug. 30, 2025 event at Doggett Ford Park in Beaumont lists only scrap tires. SETRPC’s events page says it holds events “several times a year,” while its 2021 flyer says once a year, usually late April or early May. Email bdickinson@setrpc.org to get notices.
Landfill rules for Beaumont residents
The Municipal Landfill at 5895 Lafin Dr. is open weekdays 7 a.m.–4 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m.–1 p.m. Residents who pay for garbage service get in free with proof such as a garbage utility bill or driver’s license, for debris they haul from their own single-family home. The city pages don’t say the landfill takes paint. Call 409-842-5686 before bringing any.
Contractors and businesses are on their own
SETRPC’s events are for households, so businesses can’t use them. City heavy-trash crews don’t pick up from businesses, churches, apartment buildings, construction sites or vacant lots. The landfill charges contractors and charges for business trash no matter who hauls it. No business paint option appears in the sources reviewed; ask SETRPC at 409-899-8444 ext. 7520.
