Memphis Habitat's ReStore lists paint among items it can't accept. For unopened cans, the county suggests schools, community, religious and theater groups, or a neighbor.
There is no PaintCare program in Tennessee, so stores don't take paint back for free. The county suggests asking your paint store about returning unopened cans. TDEC's mobile collection days, such as the Fayette and Tipton County events held in April and May 2026 (both past), no longer accept paint. Businesses need a private hazardous waste company.

October 7, 2026: read Shelby County's household hazardous waste page, its acceptable and not-acceptable item lists and its 2026 brochure (all opened in a browser; the site blocks scripts), the City of Millington's and City of Memphis's pages on the same facility, Memphis Habitat's ReStore donation list, TDEC's household hazardous waste page and 2026 mobile schedule, and PaintCare's locator data. Sources disagree on hours: the county page and brochure say Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the Millington and City of Memphis pages still say Tuesday and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. We used the county's.
