13225 379th Ave, Aberdeen, SD 57402
The city page gives 605-202-2975 for the landfill; the county gives 605-626-4019 and a cell, 605-380-0111. Call before bringing paint on a regular day. All loads must be covered and secured, weighed in and out, and sorted by material type. The fall cleanup ad said no 8th Ave. access and to use asphalt roads only.
102 4th Ave SE, Aberdeen, SD 57401
This is a reuse store, not a disposal site. It’s only for paint someone can still use. The listing was last checked by Dakota at Home on June 18, 2026; Habitat’s own national page lists the phone and address but not paint rules.
Brush what’s left onto scrap cardboard or wood, or pour kitty litter into the can until it’s dry. Then it can go out with your regular city trash, as the city’s paint rule allows.
Call the landfill at 605-626-4019 and ask how it handles liquid paint outside the cleanup weeks. Cover the load, and tell the scale operator what you’re bringing so you’re sent to the right spot.
Call the Help Build It Center at 605-226-5492; the state directory lists paints and stains among the items it resells. The DANR Homewise guide also says to give leftover paint to others.
The city says debris from a contractor’s work is the owner’s or contractor’s to dispose of, possibly with a private hauler. The county’s cleanup ad charged business and commercial waste, so don’t count on free disposal.
Dry the paint and set the cans out with your regular city trash by 7 a.m. on collection day. Latex can dry in the open can; for oil-based paint, pour in kitty litter or brush it onto cardboard or wood. For paint you can’t dry, call the Brown County Landfill (605-626-4019) before taking it to 13225 379th Ave.
This guide is for Aberdeen, South Dakota, in Brown County, not Aberdeen, Washington. The City of Aberdeen picks up dried paint with your weekly trash: opened latex cans that have dried up, and oil-based paint once it’s soaked up with kitty litter or brushed out on cardboard or wood. For paint you can’t dry, the city points to the Brown County Landfill, which it says takes hazardous, flammable or toxic materials; call the landfill first. South Dakota has no PaintCare program.
The City of Aberdeen’s solid waste page says it accepts empty paint cans and paint that isn’t liquid, including opened, dried-up latex. It says oil-based paint should be painted onto cardboard or wood, or have kitty litter poured into it, to dry it up. The city takes paint only when it isn’t liquid, and its prohibited list includes hazardous, flammable or toxic materials.
The county’s fall cleanup ad listed paint among the items taken September 18–26, 2026, and said fees applied only to mobile homes and business or commercial waste. The spring cleanup, which the Aberdeen Insider called free, ran April 24 to May 2, 2026. The county hasn’t posted the next dates. Outside cleanups, the county’s pages don’t list paint, so call 605-626-4019 first.
The city’s page says the Brown County Landfill takes hazardous, flammable or toxic materials and gives 605-202-2975. The county lists 605-626-4019, a cell number, 605-380-0111, and Mike Scott as manager. Either way, ask what paint costs before you go; the 2026 fee schedule has no paint line, only household trash at $49 a ton with a $5 minimum.
If you live outside the city, Brown County’s rural dump sites take residential household garbage such as paper, food scraps, textiles, Styrofoam and plastics. Paint isn’t on the list. Dry it first or take it to the landfill on 379th Ave.
South Dakota’s Dakota at Home directory says Hub Area Habitat for Humanity’s Help Build It Center, 102 4th Ave SE, takes donated paints and stains to resell. The listing says hours vary (Tuesday–Saturday), so call 605-226-5492 to check before you drop off cans.
South Dakota has no PaintCare program, and PaintCare’s locator data has no listing in Brown County. South Dakota DANR’s storm and flood debris guidance says household chemical waste should go to a household hazardous waste collection facility or the nearest municipal landfill. Its Homewise guide says to donate leftover paint to others and to let unused latex solidify with the lid off, with good ventilation, before putting it in the trash. Contractors must handle their own job-site debris; the city says that may mean a private hauler.

Put trash in bags inside a watertight 10–34 gallon can, and have it at the street or alley by 7 a.m.; you can set it out the night before. Cover and secure loads going to the landfill, and keep paint separate so the scale operator can direct you.
Full preparation checklist →Yes, once it’s dry. The city takes empty cans, dried latex and oil-based paint dried with kitty litter or brushed onto cardboard or wood. It won’t take liquid paint.
To the Brown County Landfill, 13225 379th Ave. Call 605-626-4019 first, because the county’s regular-day rules for paint aren’t posted.

October 17, 2026: read the City of Aberdeen Solid Waste page; Brown County’s Landfill, All Loads/CoverUp and Dump Sites pages; the county’s 2026 fall cleanup ad and 2026 fee schedule; the teaser of an April 23, 2026 Aberdeen Insider story (the rest is paywalled); SD DANR’s Brown County Landfill page, Homewise guide and storm-debris sheet; Dakota at Home listings for the landfill and Hub Area Habitat; Habitat’s national listing; and PaintCare’s locator data (no Brown County listing). No calls were made. Unresolved: whether the landfill takes liquid paint outside the cleanup weeks, and at what price; the county’s pages don’t say. The city and county give different landfill phone numbers. The county landfill page still shows 2024 cleanup hours under a 2026 heading. No household hazardous waste collection event for Brown County was found. The Help Build It Center’s paint conditions (opened cans, oil-based) aren’t published.
