Which option fits your Oklahoma City cleanout?4
Oklahoma City rules and tips5
THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take your paint to the Oklahoma City Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, 1621 S. Portland Ave., with your OKC water bill: Tuesday–Friday 9:30–6 or Saturday 8:30–11:30 a.m. It’s free for city residents and takes latex and oil-based paint. Latex can also be dried out and put in your trash.

Oklahoma has no paint recycling program, so in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, leftover paint goes to the city’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center at 1621 S. Portland Ave. It’s free if you live in the city and bring your OKC water bill. It takes both latex and oil-based paint, and the city says you can also dry latex and put it in the trash.

Your water bill is your ticket

Staff ask for your City of Oklahoma City water bill to show you live in the city. If a landlord pays your water, call 405-682-7038 before you go.

Saturday is a short morning

Portland Avenue is open 9:30–6 Tuesday through Friday but only 8:30–11:30 a.m. on Saturday. It’s closed Sunday and Monday. If you work weekdays, get there early on Saturday.

Edmond, Moore and Yukon can come too, maybe for a fee

The city lets residents of The Village, Yukon, Tinker Air Force Base, Shawnee, El Reno, Edmond, Bethany, Nichols Hills, Warr Acres, Mustang and Moore drop off here. Your own city may bill you for it, so check with your city first.

Outside the city limits? Try Midwest City

An OKC mailing address doesn’t always mean you live in Oklahoma City. Unincorporated Oklahoma County residents, plus Del City, Choctaw, Spencer and a few other towns, use Midwest City’s site on SE 15th Street by appointment: 405-739-1049.

Check the Swap Shop

The center has a Swap Shop, open Tuesday through Friday, 9:30 a.m.–4:45 p.m. It isn’t open during the Saturday drop-off hours. The city lists its hours but not what’s on the shelves, so ask staff if you’re hoping for paint.

Free pickup programs and other options

There’s no free store take-back in Oklahoma. For latex, the city’s hazardous waste page says you can dry it out and put it in your regular trash (your Big Blue cart). Let it harden completely first. Oil-based paint, stain and thinner should go to Portland Avenue. If the paint is still good, give it to a neighbor, school or church first. The city’s spring Special Collection at OKC Fair Park (held April 11, 2026) was for tires, computers, ammunition and medicine, not paint.

Keep paint in its original cans with the lids on tight; don’t pour cans together. Set them upright in a box in your trunk. Have your OKC water bill ready. Cans that are empty, dried out or leaking won’t be taken there; dried latex goes in the trash.

Oklahoma City questions5
Is paint drop-off free in Oklahoma City?

Yes, for Oklahoma City residents who bring a city water bill. Residents of the nearby cities on the city’s list can use it but may be charged by their own city.

Can I throw latex paint in the trash in OKC?

Yes, once it’s completely dry. The city says latex can be dried out and put in the regular trash. Liquid paint shouldn’t go in the cart.

Do I need an appointment at 1621 S. Portland?

No appointment is mentioned on the city’s page; it just lists open hours. Midwest City’s site is the one that needs an appointment.

I paint houses for a living. Can I drop off job leftovers?

No. The center doesn’t take commercial hazardous waste. You’ll need a licensed hazardous waste company.

Can my neighborhood hold its own collection day?

Yes. Neighborhood associations and HOAs can ask for a mobile collection. The city brings staff and equipment; your group picks a date and nearby spot, supplies volunteers and spreads the word. Call 405-682-7038.

Sources and how we checked6

October 12, 2026: read the City of OKC hazardous waste center page in a browser (hours, Swap Shop hours, accepted list including latex and oil-based paint, the latex-in-trash note, partner cities, exclusions, mobile neighborhood program), the city’s April 1, 2026 notice for the April 11 Special Collection at OKC Fair Park (computers, tires, ammunition and medicine only; now past), the city trash page (Big Blue cart, Utilities Customer Service 405-297-2833) and Midwest City’s page (appointment hours, served communities; OKC not listed). Oklahoma DEQ’s fact sheet lists OKC, Norman, Tulsa and Midwest City as the state’s main facilities. PaintCare’s locator lists Portland Avenue and Midwest City as non-program sites; residency-proof details for Midwest City come from that listing because the city page doesn’t give them. Not found: holiday closures, a quantity limit, Swap Shop item limits and the partner-city fees. Peer review (October 12, 2026): re-read the OKC center page, the April 11 notice and the trash page in a browser, and the Midwest City page. All hours, the water-bill rule, the 11 partner cities and the dried-latex note match. PaintCare’s listing names only 9 partner cities (no Nichols Hills or Mustang); the city’s list of 11 is used.
