Everything you need to get rid of leftover paint responsibly in Lawton.

8902 SW 11th St, Lawton, OK
The city’s two pages list different hours, so call 580-581-3468 before a Saturday afternoon trip. The city’s Residential Waste Collection Guidance lists oils and solvents as unacceptable at the landfill and doesn’t mention paint, while the Public Works chart lists water-based paint and waste oil as landfill items. The city doesn’t say where paint goes once you’re through the gate or whether a paint-only trip uses up your quarterly visit; ask at the scale.
Load the cans, tarp the truck bed and take them to the landfill at 8902 SW 11th St. With active city trash service, a current ID and your water bill, the trip costs the $3.95 gate fee if it’s your quarterly visit. Ask at the scale where the paint goes.
Keep them sealed and labeled, and bring them to a city event. The Community Cleanout is set for Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m.–noon at the FISTA parking lot. If you miss it, store them safely until the next one; the spring Trash Off took paint in 2026, but no 2027 date is posted. The landfill won’t take them.
Sort them first. The latex goes to the landfill; the Community Cleanout refuses it. The oil-based cans go to the cleanout. The cleanout also refuses unknown liquids and asks that containers be sealed and labeled, so check each can’s label before you go.
Leave paint out of the pile. Paints, solvents and liquid waste of any kind are on the city’s non-collectable list. Setting them out can bring a premium collection charge on your utility bill.
Take latex paint to the City of Lawton Landfill, 8902 SW 11th St., which lists water-based paint among what it takes; call 580-581-3468 first, because the city’s pages give different hours. Keep oil-based paint sealed and labeled at home for a city collection event; the landfill and trash service don’t handle it. The next one posted is the Community Cleanout, set for Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m.–noon in the FISTA parking lot (no latex there).
Lawton, Oklahoma (Comanche County) splits paint by type. The City of Lawton Landfill at 8902 SW 11th St. lists water-based (latex) paint among what it takes. The landfill and city trash service don’t handle oil-based paint or solvents. Those go to the city’s collection events: the fall Community Cleanout, which refuses latex, and the spring Trash Off. Oklahoma has no PaintCare program.
Public Works’ chart marks water-based paints as a landfill item, not a curbside or bulky one. The city says never to put hazardous liquids or chemicals in your polycart because the plastic can melt. Paints and solvents are on the bulky waste no-collect list, and setting out items it can’t collect can bring a charge on your utility bill.
The Community Cleanout is set for Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m.–noon, with disposal in the FISTA parking lot. It takes oil- and lead-based paints, cleaners, fuels and oils, pesticides and batteries. It refuses latex paint, unknown liquids and commercial waste. Keep containers sealed and labeled, and don’t mix them. Questions: Cam Huynh, 580-581-3478.
Trash Off 2026 was May 2 at the McMahon Memorial Auditorium parking lot, and its list included paint. It was free with proof of a Lawton address (a government-issued ID, a City of Lawton utility bill or an active military ID); non-residents paid $25, cash or check. The 2025 Community Cleanout (Nov. 15, 2025) also refused latex paint.
If you have active city trash service, one landfill trip per quarter costs only the $3.95 gate fee plus any state fees. Bring a current ID and your water bill with a matching name or address, or you’ll pay $48.80 per ton plus the $1.25 DEQ fee. Tarp or net the load; unsecured residential loads cost $50.
Oklahoma DEQ lists household hazardous waste facilities in Norman, Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Midwest City, and says they take items from surrounding communities for a small fee and may need appointments. Their own pages are narrower. Oklahoma City’s list of outside towns doesn’t include Lawton, and Norman takes Norman residents with proof of residency, by appointment. Call before you drive.
Oklahoma has no PaintCare program, and PaintCare’s locator lists no Lawton site. A 2022 city release, reported by the Southwest Ledger, said to recycle or share household chemicals, never pour them down the drain, and report spills to the Stormwater Hotline at 580-581-3565. The same release said they could be thrown away in a sealed container. Today’s cart rules say no hazardous liquids or chemicals in the cart, so follow those. The Lawton Fort Sill Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 1006 SW E Ave., 580-250-1700, runs a resale store; its website doesn’t say whether it takes paint, so call first.

For the landfill, bring a current ID and your water bill, and cover the load with a tarp or cargo net. For a cleanout event, keep oil-based paint in its original, labeled can, sealed, and don’t combine leftovers. Pull any latex cans out first; the Community Cleanout will turn them away.

October 17, 2026: read the City of Lawton’s Public Works page, Residential Waste Collection Guidance, 2026 Solid Waste Calendar (PDF), the 2026 Community Cleanout release and FISTA guide (PDF), the 2026 Trash Off and 2025 Community Cleanout releases, KLAW’s Trash Off story, a 2022 Southwest Ledger report of a city release, Oklahoma DEQ’s household hazardous waste sheet, the Oklahoma City and Norman hazardous waste pages, the Lawton Fort Sill Habitat for Humanity site and PaintCare’s locator data (no Lawton listing). Unresolved: landfill hours differ between the Public Works page and the 2026 calendar; the Residential Waste Collection Guidance lists oils and solvents as unacceptable at the landfill, unlike the Public Works chart; the city doesn’t say where paint goes at the landfill, whether a paint-only trip uses the quarterly visit, or whether non-residents can use the Community Cleanout (the 2026 notice doesn’t mention proof of residency or a fee); no street address is published for the FISTA lot; and no 2027 Trash Off date is posted. The ReStore’s paint policy isn’t published. We made no phone calls.
