Start with these

Sandusky County paint and chemical collection at Terra State Community College (run by OSS; one Saturday a year, sign-up required)

Terra State Community College, 2830 Napoleon Rd, Fremont, OH 43420

Accepts
Both latex and oil paint, plus wood stain, shellac, polyurethane, primer, sealer, stripper, thinner and turpentine. Partly full spray cans, roof tar and driveway sealer are fine too, along with pesticides, oven and drain cleaners, gasoline, kerosene and antifreeze.
Who can use it
Households that registered ahead of time for their county's site; Terra State is the Sandusky County site. Nobody is served without registering. PaintCare's listing (not OSS's page) says households only, no businesses.
Hours
Sandusky County gets a single two-hour Saturday morning. In 2026 that was October 10, 9-11 a.m., now past. Sign-up is closed and OSS showed no 2027 date on October 16, 2026.
Load limits
Nothing liquid in a container over 5 gallons. Leave home: small hand-held propane bottles, used motor oil, car and alkaline batteries, ordinary putty and glue, shingles and anything with asbestos.
Fees
No charge.

Spots are capped because costs keep rising, OSS says, so households that wait may miss out. The OSS office at 1875 E. State Street is where you phone or register, not where you unload. PaintCare's listing prints the toll-free number with a typo (188 instead of 888) and adds that empty, dry or leaking paint cans are not taken.

Which option fits your Fremont cleanout?4
Fremont rules and tips5
THE LOCAL ANSWER

Turn leftover latex solid with cat litter or sawdust, then phone Republic Services (1-800-686-2454) before it goes out, because Fremont's city rules name paint as something Republic won't pick up. The free Terra State collection for Sandusky County took place October 10, 2026; get on the list early for the next one at 419-334-7222. Oil-based paint that can't wait goes to ERG, a paid Bowling Green drop-off billed by the pound.

Fremont, Ohio, the Sandusky County seat, hosts the OSS district's office, yet you can't leave paint there. The county's yearly free chemical and paint day at Terra State Community College happened October 10, 2026, so it's done for this year. The city's Republic Services trash rules say no paint in the cart, so check before trashing dried latex.

This year's Terra State morning is done

Sandusky County's 2026 turn came on a Saturday morning, October 10, from 9 to 11, at Terra State, 2830 Napoleon Rd. Only people who signed up beforehand got in, and sign-up has closed. No 2027 date was posted when we checked.

The district office isn't a drop-off

OSS's office is at 1875 E. State Street in Fremont, and you can call 419-334-7222 with questions or to register when sign-up opens. Don't leave paint there; collections happen only at the registered sites.

Fremont's Republic cart rules

The city's trash page says not to put hazardous waste, paint, chemicals or liquids in the cart, and lists paint among things Republic Services won't collect at the curb. OSS says fully hardened latex can go in regular trash with the lid off. Call Republic at 1-800-686-2454 before setting out dried cans.

Bulk Wednesday is not for paint

Republic picks up bulk items every Wednesday with a $15 tag and a scheduling call, but paint and liquids are excluded. Tags are sold at Chuds Market, Kroger and The Friendship Store.

Oil-based paint between collections

There is no free year-round option in Sandusky County. Keep cans sealed and upright until the next OSS sign-up. The closest paid door we found is ERG Environmental in Bowling Green (Wood County), open weekdays and priced by weight.

Free pickup programs and other options

Harden latex at home and confirm with Republic how to set it out. If oil paint must leave the house before next year, a private firm in Bowling Green, ERG Environmental, weighs it and bills 75 cents per pound with a twenty-dollar floor. The OSS collection serves every Sandusky County town, including Clyde, Gibsonburg and Woodville; Ottawa and Seneca counties have their own sites on the same day. Ohio has no PaintCare program, so stores don't take paint back for free.

Soap-and-water cleanup on the label means latex; mineral spirits means oil. To harden latex, leave the lid off a thin layer or stir in cat litter or sawdust until solid. For next year's OSS collection, keep cans in their original labeled containers, 5 gallons or smaller, and register early. If you go the paid route in Bowling Green, ERG takes a card or personal check, not cash.

Fremont questions5
Is there another Fremont paint collection coming up?

Not this year. The 2026 Sandusky County morning at Terra State was October 10. OSS had not posted a 2027 date as of October 16, 2026. Check RecycleOSS.org or call 419-334-7222.

Can I drop paint at the OSS office on East State Street?

No. The office handles questions and registration. Paint is taken only at the registered collection site.

Will Republic pick up dried latex in Fremont?

The city's trash page lists paint among items Republic won't collect, while OSS says hardened latex can go in the trash. Call Republic at 1-800-686-2454 to ask how to set out solid, dried cans.

Where can I take oil-based paint right now?

Nothing free is open in Sandusky County until OSS runs its next collection. The paid fallback is ERG Environmental on Woodland Circle in Bowling Green, Monday to Friday from 9 to 4, billed by weight with a twenty-dollar minimum.

Can a business use the Terra State collection?

No. PaintCare's listing says the Terra State collection is for households only, with no businesses. OSS points businesses to private companies that take paint products.

Sources and how we checked10

October 16, 2026: read OSS's household hazardous waste page (registration shown as closed, Sandusky County site at Terra State), its events calendar (October 10, 2026, 9-11 a.m.), its special collection alternatives page and home page; the City of Fremont recycling and refuse page (Republic Services); ERG Environmental's Bowling Green drop-off page; Ohio EPA's household and business paint guides; and PaintCare locator site 17040. OSS's pages blocked direct downloads, so we read them through a web fetch tool. The city page says Republic won't take paint, while OSS says hardened latex can go in the trash; we did not find a Republic statement on dried latex in Fremont. OSS's business listing for paint had no working list we could read. A search showed a Sandusky County Habitat office in Fremont, but we found no ReStore paint policy, so it is not listed. PaintCare's phone for this site has a typo (188 instead of 888). The business exclusion and the "Saturday" weekday come from PaintCare's listing; OSS's own pages give the date and time only. Peer review on October 16, 2026 rechecked every source.

Checked October 16, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
