THE LOCAL ANSWERDry latex paint with kitty litter or sawdust and put it in your Findlay trash, or pay the Habitat ReStore on Commerce Parkway to recycle it. Hancock County's free collection for oil-based paint is once a year at the fairgrounds; PaintCare lists 2026's as June 26, and the county lists the next for June 2027. If oil paint can't wait, ERG in Bowling Green takes it weekdays for $0.75 a pound.
Findlay, Ohio, and the rest of Hancock County get one free paint and hazardous waste collection a year, at the Hancock County Fairgrounds. The 2026 one was in June and has passed; the county says the next is planned for June 2027. Until then, dry latex for the trash or pay to recycle it at the Findlay Habitat ReStore. Oil-based paint waits for June or goes to a paid site in Bowling Green.
One fairgrounds day, in June
The Hancock County Solid Waste District holds its household hazardous waste and paint collection at the fairgrounds, 1017 E. Sandusky St. PaintCare's listing (the only source for this date) shows the 2026 day was June 26, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The county page now lists June 2027, with the date and hours to be determined. Use the Sandusky Street exit and follow the signs.
Only 10 one-gallon cans of latex per car
At that event, latex is capped at 10 one-gallon cans per vehicle, and you need proof you live in Hancock County. Oil-based paint, thinner, varnish and stain are taken too. Businesses and organizations can't use it.
The ReStore takes latex year-round
Findlay's Habitat ReStore at 1200 Commerce Pkwy lists latex paint among accepted donations, with recycling fees. It does not take non-latex paints or stains. The fee isn't posted, so call 419-429-1400 first.
Drying latex is the free route
The county marks drying latex as EPA approved: let it air-dry, or speed it up with floor-dry, sawdust or kitty litter, then put it in regular trash. Findlay licenses private trash haulers rather than listing a city service, so ask your own hauler how it wants dried cans set out.
Not at the county landfill
The Hancock County Sanitary Landfill at 3763 County Road 140 does not take hazardous waste, so liquid oil-based paint can't be dumped there.
