WM mails a free disposal voucher in July bills to Reno customers (May bills in Sparks and unincorporated Washoe County). In 2025 the voucher covered 50 pounds and was good only in July, August and September. WM’s page doesn’t give 2026 dates, so check what’s printed on your voucher. Outside the voucher period you pay GrayMar’s regular rate. It’s on S. Virginia St. in south Reno, not at WM’s Commercial Row transfer station.
3 paint stores and 2 hazardous waste sites, closest first. Paint stores take house paint, stain and varnish, usually up to a set amount per visit. Hazardous waste sites also take chemicals like thinner, but some only serve local residents. Call before you go.

Read the dates on it. The 2025 voucher covered 50 pounds at GrayMar during July–September only. If it’s still valid, book a weekday slot online and bring the voucher with you.
Don’t try to dry these out. Book GrayMar (Monday–Friday, 8–3). You pay $1.00 a pound by weight, so ask GrayMar what to expect when you book.
Leave it at home. The city says the Oct. 24 cleanup, like the other fall dates, takes no hazardous waste, including paint. Dry latex for the trash instead.
Pour leftovers onto a plastic tarp or stir in kitty litter, let it harden, and put it in the trash. Northern Nevada Public Health lists both methods.
Dry leftover latex in the open can (add kitty litter if there’s more than half an inch), then put it in the trash. For oil-based paint, book a time at GrayMar Environmental, 13203 S. Virginia St., weekdays 8–3; it’s $1 a pound unless you have a valid WM voucher. Reno’s fall cleanups don’t take paint.
Reno, Nevada, has no free, year-round public drop-off for paint. Washoe County’s health district says to dry paint out and put it in the trash. For oil-based paint or anything you can’t dry, WM customers get a free voucher for GrayMar Environmental on S. Virginia St.; without it, GrayMar charges $1 a pound.
Northern Nevada Public Health says to take the lid off and let paint dry solid. If there’s more than half an inch, stir in kitty litter. Once it’s hard, it goes in your household trash. NDEP gives the same advice for latex.
WM puts a free hazardous waste voucher in July bills for Reno customers (May for Sparks and unincorporated Washoe County). In 2025 it covered 50 pounds at GrayMar and was only good July through September. Check the dates on your 2026 voucher before you book.
GrayMar is at 13203 S. Virginia St. and lists Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Book through the form on its website first. Without a voucher it’s $1.00 a pound, and paying by card adds 4%.
Reno’s Biggest Little Fall Refresh events (Oct. 17 at Brown Elementary, Oct. 24 at Wooster High, Nov. 7 at Trainer Middle, Nov. 14 at Melton Elementary) take bulky waste only. The city’s one hazardous waste day was Sept. 26, 2026, at Reno High, and it has already passed.
NDEP lists only used oil, antifreeze and car batteries at the Commercial Row and Stead transfer stations. WM says hazardous waste, including paint, never goes in your carts.
Nevada has no PaintCare program, so stores don’t take paint back. Give usable paint to a neighbor, school or theater group. For general questions about Reno’s trash service, call WM at 775-329-8822; WM’s Reno brochure says it handles hazardous waste for an extra fee. Carson City’s landfill program is for Carson City households and, per PaintCare’s listing, doesn’t take latex paint.

For drying: leave the lid off until the paint is hard all the way through, not just on top. For GrayMar: book online, bring your voucher if you have one, and keep cans sealed and upright. Weigh roughly first; it’s $1 a pound once the voucher runs out.
Full preparation checklist →Only once it’s completely dry. Northern Nevada Public Health says to dry it in the can (add kitty litter if more than half an inch) and then put it in the trash. Liquid paint can’t go in your WM cart.
GrayMar Environmental, 13203 S. Virginia St., weekdays 8–3. Book first on its website. It’s $1.00 a pound unless your WM voucher still covers it.
It already happened, on Sept. 26, 2026, at Reno High School. The neighborhood cleanups in October and November don’t take paint.
Call WM at 775-329-8822. Otherwise GrayMar charges its regular $1-a-pound rate.
October 12, 2026: read GrayMar’s Reno drop-off page (hours, $1.00 a pound, card fee, exclusions), WM’s Reno service page and its Summer 2025 newsletter and service brochure, Northern Nevada Public Health’s paint FAQ (last modified 2015), the City of Reno’s community cleanups and solid waste pages, and NDEP’s Washoe County listing. PaintCare lists no Reno-area paint sites; the nearest PaintCare-listed hazardous waste sites are in Carson City and Douglas County. GrayMar’s page has an appointment form but doesn’t say walk-ins are refused; WM’s 2025 newsletter says to schedule in advance. Unresolved: WM’s 2026 voucher dates and pound limit (WM’s page only says vouchers go out in July bills; the 50 pounds and July–September window are from 2025); whether GrayMar requires Washoe County residency. NNPH’s paint FAQ doesn’t say latex only; NDEP limits drying to latex, so we advise drying latex only and taking oil-based paint to GrayMar. Update the fall cleanup dates to past tense as they pass.
