THE LOCAL ANSWERFor oil-based paint, stain or varnish, call 775-887-2355 to book a free Thursday slot (1:30 to 4 p.m.) at the Carson City Landfill on Flint Drive. Latex paint isn't taken there. Nevada's environmental agency says to dry latex out (kitty litter helps) and put it in the trash, but WM's Carson City brochure says to keep paint out of carts, so ask WM first. Never bring paint to the landfill without an appointment.
Carson City, Nevada's capital, runs a free hazardous waste drop-off at its Flint Drive landfill on Thursday afternoons by appointment. It takes oil-based paint, stain and varnish from Carson City residents. It does not take latex paint. Nevada's environmental agency says to dry latex out and throw it away.
Oil-based only, Thursdays only
The free program takes oil-based paint, varnish, stain, gasoline, pesticides and herbicides. It runs Thursday afternoons, 1:30 to 4 p.m., by appointment. Water-based latex paint, propane cylinders and biohazard waste are refused.
Two phone numbers are listed
Environmental Control at 775-887-2355 is on the city's hazardous materials page, the landfill page's hazardous waste tab and WM's 2026 brochure. The main text of the landfill page says to call 775-283-7955. Try the first; if no one answers, try the second.
Dry latex at home
NDEP says latex paint can be dried out, with kitty litter to speed it up, and then thrown away. WM's 2026 Carson City brochure says to keep paint out of your curbside carts and the landfill, and it doesn't mention dried latex. Call WM customer service at 775-343-7596 before you put dried paint in your cart.
Your spring voucher won't cover paint
The free landfill voucher from the March or April utility bill is good through October 31, 2026. It covers one load: one pickup bed and one small trailer (4 by 8 feet) of trash. It does not cover paint or other hazardous waste; that still needs the Thursday appointment.
Not for Douglas or Lyon County
The program is for Carson City residents. Douglas County residents (Minden, Gardnerville) have their own free, appointment-only drop-off run by Douglas Disposal next to the transfer station at 902 Dump Road; call 775-782-5713.
