THE LOCAL ANSWERLet latex paint dry hard (add hardener or kitty litter to fuller cans), then bag the can and lid for your trash barrel; Springfield, Massachusetts, crews leave liquid paint behind. The city’s free 2026 hazardous waste days for oil-based paint are all over. For oil-based paint now, Veolia’s paid center at 190 East Main Street in Westfield is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
This guide is for Springfield, Massachusetts, in Hampden County. The city’s DPW holds free hazardous waste days at 70 Tapley Street for oil-based paint, but all of its 2026 days are over. Latex paint never goes there: dry it and put it in your trash barrel. For oil-based paint before 2027, the nearest weekly option is Veolia’s paid center in Westfield.
Latex must be hard before the barrel
Springfield DPW says collection crews will leave liquid or soft paint behind. Cans a quarter full or less dry in a few days with the lid off. For fuller cans, mix in paint hardener, kitty litter, wood chips or shredded paper. Put the dry can and lid in a plastic bag in your trash barrel.
Don’t overload your barrel
The city reminds you that trash barrels must weigh under 45 pounds. Don’t put many dried paint cans out in one week.
The 2026 hazardous waste days are done
Springfield held six depot days in 2026: April 18, May 16, June 13, August 15, August 22, and September 26, which was moved to October 3 because of the weather. All have passed. The city had not posted 2027 dates as of October 7, 2026.
Call 311 and leave a message
Depot days are by appointment only. Call 413-736-3111, and leave your name, phone number and address; someone calls you back to schedule. It’s for Springfield households only, with a 10-gallon limit.
Good paint has takers
Springfield DPW suggests giving unopened cans, especially white paint, to schools, religious groups, community groups or theater groups, or to a neighbor.
